About the role
The Nursery Registered Nurse (RN) at UNC HEALTH Lenoir provides evidence-based, quality patient care to newborns. The role involves utilizing the nursing process, directing, providing, and evaluating age-specific patient care according to the department's scope of service.
Responsibilities
- Analyze patient health problems and needs, develop and implement nursing care plans, and maintain medical records.
- Evaluate mother/caregiver’s understanding to education and report findings to providers.
- Provide family-centered education to mothers and caregivers regarding routine newborn care, breastfeeding, and infant safety.
- Absorb sick newborns, assist providers with IV/UVC insertion, monitoring/treating blood glucose levels, administering bedside CPAP, drawing neonatal labs, initiating/maintaining bilirubin light therapy, providing neonatal resuscitation, and stabilizing newborns for transport.
- Maintain a safe rooming-in environment and assist providers with high-risk newborn tracking, breastfeeding assistance, and ensuring a positive patient experience.
- Develop and implement nursing care plans, communicate and interact professionally with providers, staff, patients, and families, and maintain electronic medical records.
- Provide nursing services to infants and families in accordance with the scope of the RN as defined by the North Carolina Board of Nursing.
Qualifications
- Graduate from an accredited School of Nursing.
- Current licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of North Carolina.
- BLS certification, ACLS certification within one year.
- Additional certifications such as PALS, TNCC, and ENPC encouraged but not required.

Work Environment
- Exposure to blood borne pathogens, airborne pathogens and other infectious diseases requiring the use of protective equipment.
- Exposure to other hazards, such as radiation, toxic waste, chemical hazards, electrical hazards, etc. based on the departments.
- Exposure to conditions, such as noxious odors, fumes, dusts, mists, gases or poor ventilation.
- Stressful work periods and rotating shifts.
Physical Requirements
- Requires a range of physical activity from sedentary work to heavy work.
- Includes sitting, standing, walking and lifting patients; some carrying, pushing, pulling, and lifting objects involved in day-to-day activities.
- Ability to use appropriate Safe-Patient Handling equipment.
- Visual acuity, auditory and verbal skills necessary.
- Ability to concentrate in surroundings.
