About the role

King County Sheriff’s Data Technicians handle critical communication and records management between deputies, courts, and law‑enforcement databases. The position is full‑time (40 hours/week) and performed on‑site at the Regional Communications & Emergency Coordination Center (RCECC) in Renton, WA.

Responsibilities

  • Research, enter, modify, verify, and delete time‑sensitive criminal‑justice data.
  • Transmit messages via radio, telephone, and local, state, national, or international computer networks.
  • Maintain up‑to‑date electronic and paper files on warrants, court orders, stolen property, and missing or dangerous persons.
  • Provide time‑critical criminal history information to police officers and other criminal‑justice agencies.
  • Respond quickly to data and identification requests from field officers and outside agencies.
  • Assist law‑enforcement officers in establishing true identity of persons or property by comparing descriptions, identifying “wanted” entries, confirming warrants, and detecting false names.
  • Protect confidentiality of information by ensuring data is released only to authorized personnel.
  • Audit and validate all locally entered information for completeness and accuracy.

Qualifications

  • At least one year of demonstrated experience providing excellent customer service in a high‑volume, high‑pressure environment.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to perform multiple tasks with constantly changing priorities while maintaining a high level of accuracy.
  • Consistently produce error‑free results; strong attention to detail.
  • Work productively without close supervision.
  • Effective written communication: ability to listen, take accurate notes, transcribe, compose, edit, and maintain documents with correct spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
  • Experience using standard office equipment (laptops/computers, copiers, multi‑line telephone).
  • Excellent research skills; ability to search, retrieve, log, and file records from multiple sources (databases, electronic and hard‑copy files).
  • Accurate data entry and tracking; filing numerically and alphabetically using electronic and paper systems.
  • Proficiency with two‑way radio, email, phone, and in‑person communication under stress.
  • Keyboard speed of at least 35 WPM.

Desired qualifications

  • Two or more years of increasingly responsible professional administrative support or data‑entry experience.
  • Knowledge of laws, policies, procedures, and associated law‑enforcement information.
  • Previous experience in public‑safety agencies or within police data/records‑management fields.

Special requirements

  • Must pass a thorough background investigation, including a polygraph.
  • Washington State Patrol (WSP) ACCESS Level 2 certification required within six months of employment (training provided if not already achieved).

Pay

Hourly rate: $35.37 – $44.83

Schedule

  • Full‑time, 40 hours per week.
  • Eligible for overtime; the Data Unit operates 24 hours / 7 days, including holidays and nights.
  • Must be willing to work any shift, including nights, weekends, and holidays, as assigned.
