About the Role

To provide effective leadership and direction for the overall operations of the nursing department, ensuring that safe and quality patient care is provided in accordance with regulatory standards, facility and DBHDS policies, all applicable laws, and best practices. Actively participates as a member of the facility Executive Leadership, Clinical Leadership, and Senior Leadership Teams.

Responsibilities

• Develop and approve nursing standards of care, policies and procedures, programs designed to measure, assess, and improve outcomes, and comprehensive staffing plans.
• Participate with executive and clinical leaders in decision-making and strategic planning.
• Promote an environment that fosters mutual respect and ongoing learning and supports patient recovery.
• Evaluate the delivery of services for accountability and improvement; organize staff and resources for efficient performance and nursing care.
• Provide guidance when interpreting and implementing the hospital’s mission, goals, and objectives.
• Implement nursing standards in accordance with regulatory guidelines and performance improvement processes.
• Manage change, deal with ambiguity, and make timely decisions based on sound analysis of complex issues.

Requirements

• Comprehensive knowledge of and clinical experience in the principles, practices, and standards of psychiatric nursing.
• Executive leadership skills with demonstrated ability to engage in effective strategic planning, organizing, directing, and evaluating services.
• Demonstrated ability to manage a nursing department in providing comprehensive treatment to psychiatric patients in a facility setting.
• Considerable knowledge of and experience with administrative practices and procedures, including program planning, implementation, and management; budget development; and management/supervision of nursing staff.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to effectively use an electronic health record and technology.
• Knowledge of Infection Prevention and Control processes and requirements.
• Extensive knowledge of performance improvement principles.
• Ability to deal effectively with professional and non-professional personnel within and outside the facility by identifying commonalities, building consensus, and focusing on resolving problems.
• Extensive knowledge of nursing management.
• Ability to interpret governing directives and effectively integrate nursing services.
• Demonstrated ability to establish working systems and processes and to develop and involve others.
• Extensive knowledge of the current complexities of the health care industry, expertise in budgeting, trend variance analysis, strategic planning, marketing, and an understanding of information technology, as well as political and economic skills.

Preferred Qualifications

• Concentration in psychiatric nursing or mental health nursing.
• Clinical, administrative, and management experience in a psychiatric hospital setting.
• Advanced degree in psychiatric mental health nursing, or nursing administration.
