Responsibilities

• Collects patient health data relevant to the operative or invasive procedure throughout the perioperative continuum.
• Performs a focused nursing assessment preoperatively in reference to the planned procedure.
• Intraoperatively assesses patient, wound, and sterile field.
• Monitors and assesses patient's postoperative status to determine progress toward expected outcomes or signs and symptoms of postoperative complications.
• Analyzes assessment data to determine nursing diagnosis and formulates or modifies it based on relevant patient data throughout the perioperative continuum.
• Identifies and communicates desired patient outcomes throughout the perioperative continuum, establishing individualized outcomes in collaboration with the patient and healthcare providers.
• Develops and manages an individualized plan of care that directs RNFA interventions, ensuring it is age-specific and reflects professionally recognized standards of care.
• Plans care to minimize wasted supplies and reduce the length of operative or invasive procedures, including planning for patient discharge and accessing community resources.
• Implements, manages, and coordinates the perioperative plan of care related to RNFA interventions, applying nursing knowledge for effective problem-solving and decision-making.
• Verifies operative procedure, surgical site, and laterality; participates in patient positioning in collaboration with the surgical team.
• Functions as first assistant to the primary surgeon during operative or invasive procedures, minimizing procedure length and maximizing surgeon efficiency.
• Implements and maintains sterile technique to prevent patient exposure to microorganisms and other particulates.
• Protects the patient from thermal, electrical, chemical, or mechanical injury throughout the perioperative continuum.
• Implements hemostasis techniques and measures to prevent injury related to retained surgical items.
• Makes postoperative rounds in conjunction with or at the direction of the surgeon.
• Provides individualized patient, designated support person, or healthcare provider education regarding identified needs related to RNFA interventions.
• Facilitates preoperative procedures and assists with placement of invasive lines as needed.
• Harvests saphenous veins and radial arteries and assists in the operating room as needed.
• Prepares harvested saphenous vein/radial artery for coronary artery bypass grafting, including making and closing incisions.
• Assists attending surgeon as either a first or second assistant.
• Participates in teaching fundamental operating room techniques, including aseptic technique, tying knots, hemostasis, tissue handling, wound closure, and operating room protocols.
• Acts as a consultant to operating room and house staff personnel concerning cardiac surgery protocols and patient care as designated by the supervising physician.
• Evaluates patient progress toward attaining outcomes and conducts systematic, ongoing evaluations of RNFA interventions.
• Participates in quality monitoring and performance improvement activities to enhance patient outcomes related to RNFA practice.
• Practices first assisting in accordance with professional standards, state and federal laws, and accreditation standards.
• Complies with health care organization policies related to RNFA practice and provides care consistent with facility policies and procedures.
• Exhibits professional conduct, maintains confidentiality, and works cooperatively with coworkers, physicians, and supervisors.
• Adjusts to variable work schedules and patient volumes, accepts and implements administrative medical changes, and adheres to the attendance policy.
• Obtains 100% of mandatory hospital and unit-specific in-services annually and documents competency in clinical skills.
• Attends staff meetings as required and uses established lines of communication for problem resolution and interpersonal conflict.
• Interacts and contributes to the professional growth of peers, colleagues, and others through mentorship and education.
• Collaborates with the perioperative team, patient, and designated support persons to plan and communicate care.
• Considers factors related to safety, effectiveness, efficiency, environment, and cost in planning, delivering, and evaluating patient care.
• Advocates for technical advances in clinical care to increase efficiency and improve outcomes.
• Provides leadership in the profession and professional practice setting, supervising peers, colleagues, and allied health personnel as assigned.
• Participates in ongoing quality improvement activities and advocates for advances in perioperative nursing through professional organizations.
• Presents a minimum of 2 in-services and 2 patient conferences annually, attends 75% of staff meetings, and serves as a preceptor/clinical resource.
• Advocates for a culture of safety for patients and perioperative team members in the workplace and for patient rights.

Requirements

• Current CNOR and CRNFA Certification.
• Current RN Licensure in the state of Florida.
• BLS and Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) required.
• Minimum of 2 years of experience in the area of specialty.
