REVISED_MTA Police Sergeant
This recruitment is open to all current qualified MTA Police employees only and is being used to create an eligibility list for a current vacancy, with potential future vacancies throughout MTA.
About the role
The MTA Police Sergeant assists in the development, supervision, education, and direction of subordinate police personnel, reporting directly to the Lieutenant. The role primarily operates in the field, exposing the employee to life-threatening situations, hazardous conditions, and harsh environments.
This position is located in Baltimore, Maryland. Employees must adhere to all safety rules, policies, and regulations, including wearing personal protective equipment and reporting hazards or unsafe acts. Failure to comply may result in disciplinary action up to and including termination.
Responsibilities
- Supervise and direct subordinate police personnel.
- Develop and implement policies and procedures.
- Interview subordinate personnel to gather information pertinent to policy development.
- Operate a motor vehicle as required by assigned duties.
- Respond to call-ins 24 hours a day and provide a reachable telephone number.
- Demonstrate proficiency in the safe use and care of firearms as required by the Police Training Commission.
- Wear protective clothing, such as a ballistic vest.
- Comply with substance abuse testing protocols under state and federal regulations.
Requirements
- Graduation from a standard high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate acceptable to the Maryland State Board of Education.
- Three years of experience as an MTA Police Officer and certification as a Field Training Officer (FTO).
- Preference given to current MTA Police Corporals; however, Officers with a minimum of 3 years' experience may apply.
- Possession of a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.
- Police officer certification issued by the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission.
- Considered an Essential Employee; must agree to all policies and procedures related to this status.
Selection Process
The selection process consists of a multiple-choice examination and an oral interview, each scored on a scale of 1 to 100. Candidates must achieve a minimum passing score of 70% on the multiple-choice examination to proceed. The final score is a combined total of both components, weighted equally, used to create a rank-ordered eligibility list for promotion.
The examination and interview will assess knowledge of the following:
- Legal Guide for Police, 12th Edition (Walker & Hemmens).
- Maryland Digest of Criminal Laws (Revised October 1, 2025).
- Maryland Vehicle Law Annotated 2024/2025 Edition.
- MTA Police Force Standard Operating Procedures (effective 09/2025).
- Collective Bargaining Agreement (AFSCME Council #67, Local 1859, effective 2024–2027).
Additional skills assessed include clear verbal communication and the ability to interview personnel for policy development.
