This recruitment is open to all current qualified MTA Police employees only and is being used to create an eligibility list for a current vacancy, with potential use for future vacancies.

About the role

The MTA Police Sergeant assists in the development, supervision, education, and direction of subordinate police personnel, reporting directly to the Lieutenant. The role primarily operates in the field, involving life-threatening situations, hazardous conditions, and exposure to harsh environments.

This position is located in Baltimore, Maryland. Employees must adhere to all safety rules, policies, and regulations, including wearing personal protective equipment and reporting hazards or unsafe acts. Failure to comply may result in disciplinary action, up to and including termination.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise and direct subordinate police personnel.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of policies and procedures.
  • Respond to and manage life-threatening and hazardous situations.
  • Conduct interviews with subordinate personnel to gather information pertinent to policy development.
  • Operate a motor vehicle as required by assigned duties.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in the safe use and care of firearms, as mandated by the Police Training Commission.
  • Wear protective clothing, such as a ballistic vest.
  • Adhere to substance abuse testing protocols in accordance with state and federal regulations.
  • Serve as an Essential Employee, available for call-in 24 hours a day.

Requirements

  • Graduation from a standard high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate acceptable to the Maryland State Board of Education.
  • Three (3) years of experience as an MTA Police Officer and certification as a Field Training Officer (FTO). Current MTA Police Corporals will be given preference.
  • Possession of a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.
  • Police officer certification issued by the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission.
  • Compliance with minimum selection standards for police officer certification as outlined in the Code of Maryland Regulations, Title 12, Subtitle 04, Chapter 01.

Selection Process

The selection process consists of a multiple-choice examination and an oral interview, each scored on a scale of 1 to 100. Candidates must achieve a minimum passing score of 70% on the multiple-choice examination to proceed. The final score is a combined total of both components, weighted equally, used to create a rank-ordered eligibility list for promotion.

The examination and interview will assess knowledge of the following documents:

  • Legal Guide for Police, 12th Edition (Walker & Hemmens)
  • Maryland Digest of Criminal Laws (Revised October 1, 2025)
  • Maryland Vehicle Law Annotated (2024/2025 Edition)
  • MTA Police Force Standard Operating Procedures (effective 09/2025)
  • Collective Bargaining Agreement (AFSCME Council #67, Local 1859, effective January 1, 2024 – December 31, 2027)

The following skills and abilities will also be assessed:

  • Clear and effective verbal communication.
  • Ability to interview subordinate personnel to gather information for policy and procedure development.
