About the role

The MTA Police Sergeant is responsible for assisting in the development, supervision, education, and direction of subordinate police personnel. The employee reports directly to the Lieutenant and works primarily in the field, handling life-threatening situations and exposing themselves to hazardous environments.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the development, supervision, education, and direction of subordinate police personnel.
  • Work primarily in the field, handling life-threatening situations and exposing oneself to hazardous environments.
  • Operate a motor vehicle as required, and possess a valid driver’s license.
  • Obtain and maintain police officer certification issued by the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission.
  • Adhere to safety rules, policies, regulations, and personal protective equipment requirements to support a safe and healthy working environment.
  • Attend and participate in safety meetings, be aware of hazards in the work area, and report hazards, unsafe acts, near misses, injuries, and accidents immediately.
  • Support a safe and healthy work environment by refraining from willful violations of safety rules and procedures, reckless and negligent behavior, involvement in criminal activities, and the misuse of drugs or alcohol.
  • Perform work only for which they have the appropriate safety training.

Requirements

  • Graduation from a standard high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate acceptable to the Maryland State Board of Education.
  • Three (3) years of experience as an MTA Police Officer.
  • Current MTA Police Corporals will be given preference; however, Officers may apply that have a minimum of 3 years' experience as an MTA Police Officer.
  • Employees are subject to call-in 24 hours a day and must provide a telephone number where they can be reached.
  • Employees in this classification are considered Essential Employees and must sign and agree to all policies and procedures relating to Essential Employee status.
  • Employees in this classification are required to bear firearms and demonstrate practical knowledge and proficiency in the safe use and care of firearms.
  • Employees are subject to substance abuse testing in accordance with Transportation Code of MD Regulations 11.02.11, testing for illegal Use of Drugs, and Code of Federal Regulations 49- Federal department of Transportation Drug and Alcohol Testing Protocols and Federal Transit Administration Alcohol Testing Rules.

Qualifications

  • Education: Graduation from a standard high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate acceptable to the Maryland State Board of Education.
  • Experience: Three (3) years of experience as an MTA Police Officer.
  • Licenses & Certifications: Must possess or obtain police officer certification issued by the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission.

Skills

  • Use of verbal communication in a clear and effective manner.
  • Ability to interview subordinate personnel to gather information pertinent to the development of policies and procedures.
