About the role

The Batch Plant Operator is responsible for controlling production and load out of materials produced in the batch plant, as well as for scheduling and ensuring timely delivery of supplies to the plant to perform duties in conjunction with dispatch loading instructions.

Responsibilities

  • Batch concrete loads according to mixed designs and specifications.
  • Read dispatch orders and understand required needs for production of materials.
  • Monitor gauges, dials, and operation of machinery to ensure conformance to processing specifications.
  • Coordinate batching and loading of all concrete leaving plant.
  • Check concrete’s slump to ensure proper specifications.
  • Produce on-time and in-spec concrete for the customer.
  • Conduct batching operations in an efficient and safe manner while complying with all local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Conduct batching functions in a professional manner and ensure compliance with job specifications and all applicable environmental and air quality regulations.
  • Responsible for efficient working conditions of plant equipment. Perform maintenance to batch plant which includes greasing, sweeping, shoveling, performing equipment repairs, cleaning, and removing jam-ups.
  • Become proficient in necessary batching, dispatching, and quality control software.
  • Understand appropriate uses of various mix designs.
  • Maintain time and material records.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or general education degree (GED) preferred.
  • 1-2 years of concrete or construction-related experience required.
  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Must pass pre-employment drug screen and criminal background check.
  • Possessing and maintaining a valid driver’s license preferred.
  • Strict adherence to safety requirements and procedures as outlined in the Employee and Safety Policy Manuals/Handbooks.
  • Regular, on-time, and consistent attendance is required and must be willing to work nights, weekends, and holidays when necessary.
  • Individuals are required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) in designated operations and production areas as stated by OSHA and/or MSHA, Company Policy, and specific Job Site Requirements.

Skills

  • Ability to understand appropriate uses of various mix designs.
  • Ability to test concrete for conformance with mix design and specification.
  • Ability to conduct moisture tests, yield calculation, and yield adjustment of mix designs for conformance with mix designs and specifications.
  • Follow verbal (in person and over the phone) and written instructions.
  • Willingness and ability to work in and adapt to changes in circumstances, tasks, customer needs, and other conditions that may affect daily responsibilities.
  • Ability to cope well in stressful environments and communicate professionally.
  • Demonstrate a strong dedication to meeting the needs and expectations of internal and external customers.
  • Willingness to work independently within a team environment and assist the team with other duties as required.

Physical Requirements

  • Able to communicate with others by email, telephone, and in person.
  • Able to utilize a computer for batching, email communication, and other processing.
  • Able to regularly lift and/or move up to 15 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to frequently talk, hear, walk, and sit as well as occasionally stand, reach, use hands and fingers to manipulate objects or controls, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, and crouch.
  • Vision abilities (with correction) include close, distance, peripheral, depth, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Able to climb ladders and work at heights as well as work in tight quarters.

Work Environment

  • Regularly exposed to outside weather conditions.
  • Frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts.
  • Occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles and toxic or caustic chemicals.
  • Occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, extreme cold, and extreme heat.
  • Noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.
