REGISTERED NURSE: University Hospital (Surgical Short Stay Unit)

About the Role

The Surgical Short Stay Unit is a 13-bay unit specializing in the care of short-stay surgical, procedural, and medicine patients. Care is provided for a wide range of surgical and medical patients requiring brief but intensive monitoring and teaching. The nurses and physicians in the unit are experts in this care, delivering individualized nursing to meet each patient and/or family’s personal needs.

Responsibilities

• Provide focused, quality care for a variety of adult medicine and surgical patients requiring acute nursing care for 8–48 hours, including post-procedural patients needing close observation, assessment, and teaching.
• Serve as a nurse member of a collaborative, multidisciplinary team in a busy outpatient setting.
• Assist with diagnostic and therapeutic procedures as necessary.
• Provide patient and family education specific to procedures, diagnoses, and self-care at home.
• Fulfill the charge nurse role, coordinating unit operations and prioritizing urgent surgical or medical issues.
• Manage post-operative and medical patients using critical thinking to recognize and solve patient problems.
• Utilize the nursing process and standards to prevent or manage actual or potential patient problems related to disease and treatment.
• Identify and meet patient and family learning needs, serving as a patient advocate.
• Coordinate care between multiple departments and delegate to healthcare team members according to the Nurse Practice Act.
• Collaborate with medical staff to optimize patient care.
• Participate in nursing and medical research, facilitating the transfer of new knowledge to patient care.
• Engage in the Quality Improvement Process and stay current with surgical procedures, medications, and literature.
• Maintain professionalism, positive attitude, and effective communication under workload and stress.
• Input, retrieve, and interpret data from manual and computer-based information systems.
• Use organizational skills to ensure safe, efficient, and continuous patient care in collaboration with other disciplines.
• Implement change to achieve team goals and seek opportunities for professional development.

Requirements

• Current license to practice nursing in Michigan.
• Minimum of one (1) year of current medical-surgical RN experience in an acute care hospital setting.

Qualifications

Required:

• Current Michigan RN license.
• One year of acute-care medical-surgical RN experience.

Desired:

• BSN preferred.
• Ability to effectively communicate with patients, families, and healthcare team members.

Pay

• Hourly range for Registered Nurses: $41.78–$64.81/hour.
• Shift differentials:
  • Evening Shift: +$3.00/hour
  • Night Shift: +$4.00/hour
  • Day Shift Weekend: +$2.90/hour
  • Evening Shift Weekend: +$5.90/hour
  • Night Shift Weekend: +$6.90/hour
  • Charge Nurse: +$1.00/hour

Schedule

• Hours/Week: 24 hours/week (0.6 FTE).
• Shift: Evening shift with 8- and 12-hour shifts.
• Location: University Hospital – Surgical Short Stay Unit.
• Unit operates Monday through Saturday; employees may be required to float to designated units during low census.
