About the Role

The 5D Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU) is a 20-bed adult ICU caring for patients who have undergone major operations or are experiencing complications requiring extensive physiological monitoring. This includes patients with peripheral vascular diseases, cancer, hepatic, pancreatic or renal failure, cardiac and pulmonary disease, often presenting with multi-system failure. Care involves swan ganz monitoring, ventilator support, parenteral nutrition, and fluid and electrolyte corrections. The unit also receives adult liver transplants and serves as a major referral center for adult ECMO/respiratory failure patients, with potential overflow from Trauma, Neuro, Medicine, and Cardiac ICUs.

SICU charge nurses participate as adult Rapid Response Providers throughout University Hospital. The unit offers 12-hour night shifts, comprehensive orientation, and career development opportunities while working with a diverse patient population.

Responsibilities

  • Provide critical care nursing for adult patients in a Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU).
  • Manage patients with complex conditions, including multi-system failure, requiring advanced monitoring and interventions (e.g., swan ganz monitoring, ventilator support, parenteral nutrition).
  • Care for patients post-major surgery, including liver transplants, and those requiring ECMO or respiratory failure support.
  • Serve as an adult Rapid Response Provider across University Hospital.
  • Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team in a high-acuity, fast-paced environment.
  • Participate in delegation, teamwork, and communication to support a family-centered care environment.

Requirements

  • Current Michigan RN license.
  • Minimum of 18 months of current Telemetry RN experience.
  • Resume required for all applicants (internal and external).

Qualifications

  • BSN preferred.
  • Two or more years of Adult Surgical ICU experience.
  • CCRN certification preferred.
  • ACLS certification.
  • ECMO RN experience or experience in liver/kidney transplantation preferred.
  • Demonstrated effective delegation, teamwork, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Commitment to supporting a family-centered care environment.

Pay

  • Hourly salary range for Registered Nurses: $41.78–$64.81/hour.
  • Shift differentials:
    • Evening Shift: +$3.00/hour
    • Night Shift: +$4.00/hour
    • Day Shift Weekend: +$2.90/hour
    • Evening Shift Weekend: +$5.90/hour
    • Night Shift Weekend: +$6.90/hour
    • Charge Nurse: +$1.00/hour

Actual Nursing Framework LEVEL (A–E) and salary determined at time of hire.

Schedule

All new employees may be expected to float to designated units during low census periods.

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the University of Michigan and the Michigan Nurses Association/U-M Professional Nurse Council union.
