About the Role

The registered professional nurse is responsible for utilizing job skills to effectively carry out the nursing process: including assessment, diagnosis, outcomes identification, planning, evaluation, documentation, and time management. They are responsible for quality communication, teamwork, and leadership/professionalism. The RN directs, coordinates, and implements patient teaching, quality/safety initiatives, and activities of other health team personnel while maintaining standards of professional nursing.

A Registered Nurse II (RN II) is responsible for the care of the assigned population and must complete yearly mandatory competencies, unit-specific competencies, and Professional Practice Ladder requirements, which include:

  • Assuming responsibility as Charge Nurse
  • Participation in PI Activity and department initiatives
  • Communication of information from unit or hospital committees, Valley Health-paid education/seminar/conference workshops, or nursing articles
  • Maintaining a current portfolio submitted annually by March 1st
  • Routinely soliciting and validating patient/family satisfaction
  • Participating in peer review for the unit
  • Developing bulletin boards or posters that provide educational information to staff, patients, and family members

Requirements

  • Associate’s degree in Nursing (RN Diploma, ASN, or ADN) is required; Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (BSN) is preferred
  • Minimum of 1,872 full-time or part-time hours (936 if holding a BSN) of RN experience and completion of a performance evaluation
  • RN license required, with eligibility to practice in Virginia and/or West Virginia (multistate license under the Nurse Licensure Compact or a single-state license)
  • BLS Certification (Basic Life Support) – American Heart Association (AHA) ‘Healthcare Provider’ (HCP) required prior to completion of orientation
  • Relevant specialty certification is preferred
  • Meets all requirements of an RN I
  • Competent to provide care based on cognitive, physical, emotional, and chronological stages of human growth and development
  • Competent to provide care using the nursing process
  • Must have a reliable means of phone communication with the hospital
