About the role

The City of Costa Mesa is offering a $15,000 signing bonus for qualified Lateral Public Safety Dispatcher applicants, payable at $5,000 each upon hire, one year of service, and 18 months of probation. Entry Level Public Safety Dispatcher applicants receive a $10,000 signing bonus, split similarly. The position involves receiving and dispatching emergency and non-emergency calls, working under general supervision.

Responsibilities

  • Receive and dispatch emergency and non-emergency calls
  • Use telephone, radio, or other communications equipment to communicate with the public, police, and fire departments
  • Perform skilled work in handling incoming calls
  • Dispatch necessary units and equipment for emergency service

Requirements

  • Currently employed with another public safety agency as a public safety dispatcher
  • Successfully completed that agency's probationary period
  • Possess a current POST Public Safety Dispatcher Certificate (or equivalent)

Qualifications

  • Completed the ECOMM (Emergency Communications) written exam within the last 12 months
  • Passed the exam with scores of 53 or higher in Call Taker, 64 or higher in Recording (Notes), and 43 or higher in Dispatch
  • Attached a typing certificate meeting the criteria
  • Willing and able to obtain the Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD) certificate within 12 months of appointment
  • Valid California Class C Driver's License or higher

  • Senior Public Safety Dispatcher: $82,644 - $110,772 annually

Public Employee Disaster Service Worker: Required to perform assigned disaster service worker duties in emergencies or disasters. Contributions to CalPERS retirement formula depend on eligibility. Employees can choose between 2%@60 or 2%@62 retirement formula. Employees receive a flexible benefit contribution of $1,800 monthly. New employees must enroll in the direct deposit program.
