About the role

The Juneau Police Department is seeking Public Safety Dispatchers. Remote testing is available for applicants outside of Juneau. Ideal candidates communicate well, provide excellent customer service, remain calm under pressure, and have strong attention to detail.

Responsibilities

  • Answer phones, manage radio channels, provide customer service, solve problems, share information, and track activities in a computer-aided dispatch system.
  • Perform data entry, talk to callers during their times of need, and make decisions supporting the community, Juneau Police Department, and Capital City Fire/Rescue responders.
  • Handle a variety of calls involving police, community service, fire, EMS, the Mobile Crisis Team, or Sobering Center responders.
  • Work independently, use good judgment, and prioritize tasks quickly.

Requirements

  • Education: High school graduation or equivalent.
  • Experience: 24 months of general administrative, communications, or technical work experience; 12 months of experience using computer systems; 12 months of customer service, call center, collections, legal office, or reception work.
  • Other: At least 18 years of age at the time of appointment.

Qualifications

  • Must pass audiometric testing.
  • Must complete APSIN security clearance.
  • Must pass physical requirements.

Pay

The starting salary range is $28,000 to $32,000 annually, plus a hiring bonus of up to $10,000 and relocation assistance.

Schedule

This is a full-time union-represented position with a combination of 8-hour and 12-hour shifts, typically working 40+ hours per week. Shifts include evenings, overnight, weekends, and holidays. Extra pay is available for swing and night shifts.

Special Notes

  • Background investigation and psychological evaluation required.
  • Audiometric testing is mandatory.
  • Former Juneau Police Department dispatchers must submit to this test.
  • Marijuana use in the past year disqualifies applicants.
  • APSIN clearance is necessary.
