Project Engineer (Transportation Engineering Technician IV)

About the role

The Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA) is seeking a Project Engineer or Lead Inspector to serve on small to medium construction contracts or major bridge and highway projects. The position involves supervision, inspection, coordination, and communication tasks.

Responsibilities

• Supervise and direct inspection staff by assigning duties, providing guidance, and ensuring all work is completed accurately and in accordance with contract requirements.
• Monitor contractor compliance through daily coordination, field inspections, and communication with contractors and their representatives.
• Cookordination construction activities among contractors, the MDTA, and other stakeholders to minimize disruptions.
• Review and enforce Maintenance of Traffic (MOT) plans to ensure safe operations, including coordination with MDTA Operations Center and project personnel.
• Evaluate project documentation with project leadership to address revisions, delays, and changes.
• Communicate potential risks such as traffic, weather, and constructability issues to supervisors.
• Prepare punch lists and Non-Conformance Reports to address deficiencies.
• Maintain accurate project records, including as-built drawings and progress updates to support scheduling and project tracking.

Requirements

• Five years of experience in technical engineering related work in the areas of design, traffic, construction, materials testing, engineering surveys, maintenance, or planning.
• Six (6) months of this experience must include performing inspections on major bridge or highway construction projects.

Qualifications

• Education: Graduation from a standard high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.
• Licenses & Certifications: Must possess a Driver’s License valid in the State of Maryland.
• NICET Certification or other in-house certifications may be required for some positions.
• Employees in this classification may be required to possess Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) certification for inspection of In-Service Bridges, or have the ability to acquire this certificate within a given time period.
• Employees in this classification may be required to achieve certification in field testing procedures in concrete, soil aggregate and Hot Mix Asphalt within a given time period.

Skills

• Strong organizational and communication skills.
• Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
• Knowledge of contract specifications and regulatory requirements.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.

Pay

The salary range for this position is $64,000 - $96,000 per year, commensurate with experience.

Schedule

The schedule for this position is typically Monday through Friday, with occasional evening and weekend work as needed.
