Responsibilities

This position is responsible for performing various tasks, including:

• Interpreting blueprints and performing layouts and fabricating metal structural parts
• Bracing parts in position within the hull of a ship for riveting or welding
• Quality control, including verifying material compatibility with specifications
• Laying out positions of parts on metal, working from blueprints or templates
• Locating and marking reference lines, such as center, buttock, and frame lines
• Positioning parts in the hull of a ship, assisted by a Rigger
• Aligning parts in relation to each other, using jacks, turnbuckles, clips, wedges, and mauls
• Marking the location of holes to be drilled and installing temporary fasteners
• Installing packing, gaskets, liners, and structural accessories and members
• Preparing molds and templates for fabrication of non-standard parts
• Removing high spots and cutting bevels, using hand files, portable grinders, and cutting torches
• Tack welding clips and brackets in place prior to permanent welding
• Rolling, bending, flanging, cutting, and shaping plates, beams, and other heavy metal parts

Requirements

Must have a basic understanding of mathematics and be able to perform operations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, as well as work with fractions.

Required education and experience include a High School Diploma and/or one year certificate from college or technical school, and:

• 1st Class: 3-5 years of marine/industrial plate/structural fitting experience
• 2nd Class: 1-3 years of marine/industrial plate/structural fitting experience

Working Conditions

The work is performed in open-air conditions, such as noisy, hot, and cold environments, and requires wearing hearing, eye, head protection, and proper PPE.

The job involves:

• Climbing (up to 100 feet) and lifting (up to 50 lbs.)
• Traversing gangways and scaffolding at varying heights while wearing fall prevention equipment
• Working with hot and sometimes hazardous materials
• Working aboard ships, both on and offshore, as well as in confined spaces
• Standing and operating equipment for up to four continuous hours
• Long periods of sitting in awkward positions, standing on a variety of surfaces, bending over, crouching, and climbing up and over obstructions
