Responsibilities

• Perform basic mathematical operations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and work with fractions.
• Interpret blueprints and perform layouts to fabricate metal structural parts, including plates, bulkheads, frames, and braces within the hull of a ship for riveting or welding.
• Verify material compatibility with specifications before use.
• Lay out positions of parts on metal using blueprints or templates and tools such as scribes and hand tools.
• Locate and mark reference lines such as center, buttock, and frame lines.
• Position parts in the hull of a ship, assisted by a Rigger, and align parts in relation to each other using jacks, turnbuckles, clips, wedges, and mauls.
• Mark locations of holes to be drilled and install temporary fasteners to hold parts in place for welding or riveting.
• Install packing, gaskets, liners, and structural accessories such as doors, hatches, brackets, and clips.
• Prepare molds and templates for fabrication of nonstandard parts.
• Remove high spots and cut bevels using hand files, portable grinders, and cutting torches.
• Tack weld clips and brackets in place prior to permanent welding.
• Roll, bend, flange, cut, and shape plates, beams, and other heavy metal parts using shop machinery such as plate rolls, presses, bending brakes, and joggle machines.
• Safely and efficiently use various hand, power, and cutting tools, including large machinery such as a metal shear, metal brake, and band saw.

Requirements

• High School Diploma and/or one-year certificate from college or technical school preferred.
• Must be able to pass a hands-on test when applicable.
• Marine/industrial plate/structural fitting experience:
  • 1st Class: 3–5 years
  • 2nd Class: 1–3 years

Working Conditions

• Open-air conditions including noise, heat, and cold.
• Must wear hearing, eye, head protection, and proper PPE.
• Some climbing (up to 100 feet) and lifting (up to 50 lbs.) involved.
• Traverse gangways and scaffolding at varying heights while wearing fall prevention equipment.
• Work with hot and sometimes hazardous materials.
• Work aboard ships, both onshore and offshore, as well as in confined spaces.
• Ability to stand and operate equipment for up to four continuous hours.
• Long periods of sitting in awkward positions, standing on various surfaces and angles, bending over, crouching, and climbing over obstructions such as scaffolding, ladders, and internal barge and boat structural members.
