Responsibilities
- Perform mathematical operations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and work with fractions
- Interpret blueprints and perform layouts and fabricate metal structural parts, such as plates, bulkheads, and frames, and brace them in position within the hull of a ship for riveting or welding
- Verify material compatibility with specifications before use
- Layout position of parts on metal, working from blueprints or templates, and using scribe and hand tools
- Locate and mark reference lines, such as center, buttock, and frame lines
- Position parts in the hull of a ship, assisted by a Rigger, and align parts in relation to each other using jacks, turnbuckles, clips, wedges, and mauls
- Mark location of holes to be drilled and install temporary fasteners to hold part in place for welding or riveting
- Install packing, gaskets, liners, and structural accessories and members, such as doors, hatches, brackets, and clips
- Prepare molds and templates for fabrication of non-standard parts
- Remove high spots and cut bevels using hand files, portable grinders, and cutting torches
- Tack weld clips and brackets in place prior to permanent welding
- Roll, bend, flange, cut, and shape plates, beams, and other heavy metal parts using shop machinery
- Safely and efficiently use various hand, power, and cutting tools, including large machinery such as metal shear, metal brake, and band saw
Requirements
High School Diploma and/or one year certificate from college or technical school preferred. Must be able to pass a hands-on test when applicable and have marine/industrial plate/structural fitting experience.
Qualifications
- 1st Class: 3-5 years of experience
- 2nd Class: 1-3 years of experience
