Pile Driver - South Louisiana and Surrounding Area

About the role

Orion is seeking an experienced Pile Driver local to Southern Louisiana to support field construction operations on marine and heavy civil projects throughout the region. Pile Drivers perform critical hands-on work installing and extracting steel, concrete, and timber piling in support of docks, wharves, ports, marine terminals, bridges, bulkheads, marine foundations, and other waterfront infrastructure. This position works alongside Crane and Equipment Operators, Carpenters, Welders, Laborers, and field leadership in active marine construction environments. Safety comes first, teamwork matters, and skilled tradespeople are essential to Orion’s success.

Responsibilities

• Work as assigned by the Barge Foreman and/or Pile Driver Operator to ensure successful completion of marine construction projects.
• Assist in unloading and assembling crane or other hoisting equipment for piledriving activities.
• Unload and assemble piledriving hammer and leads.
• Unload various types of piling: concrete pipe, H-piling, timber, and steel sheet piling.
• Fuel, lubricate, and maintain the piledriving hammer.
• Lay out from blueprints and/or site plans the exact location where pilings will be driven.
• Perform site preparation for installation of concrete and wood structures.
• Prepare piling to be driven and assist in positioning and driving piling.
• Assist with installation of boom and hoisting cables on hoisting equipment.
• Employ knowledge of construction rigging (slings, cable chokers, spreader bars, multi-part load blocks) to complete crane hoisting tasks.
• Use hand signals to communicate with the Pile Driver Operator of hoisting equipment.
• Work with Pile Driver Operator to maneuver and position loads safely.
• Set up power and hand tools necessary to prepare pilings.
• Use oxygen/acetylene welding torch to cut steel plates, pipes, beams, etc.
• Use pneumatic power tools (drills, countersinks, tuggers) as required.
• Use gasoline chain saw to cut timbers and timber piling.
• Dress and cap pilings after driving and prepare them to receive the superstructure.
• Build form work for concrete structures and construct timber falsework for various structures.
• Perform other piledriving duties as required by specific projects.
• Work closely with Pile Driver Operator, Barge Foreman, Welders, Laborers, and other skilled craft persons to complete projects safely and efficiently.
• Participate in Safety and Environmental initiatives to comply with State/Federal regulations and improve Company programs.

Requirements

• A minimum of two (2) years crane rigging and/or operations experience on land and on barges, or equivalent combination of experience and training.
• Understand basic functions and operations of various pile hammers (diesel, air, hydraulic, and drop hammers).
• Ability to read and understand blueprints or site plans.
• General knowledge of construction rigging (slings, cable chokers, spreader bars, multi-part load blocks).

Physical/Mental Requirements

• Ability to walk, step, climb, or move between job site locations, including getting on/off work barges, boats, or docks of varying heights.
• Stand, stoop, kneel, squat, climb, or sit for long periods.
• Perform repetitive movements involving feet, shoulders, arms, wrists, hands, and back.
• Climb vertical ladders to heights of 40'-50'.
• Work in confined spaces and at elevated heights.
• Lift and carry objects up to 50 lbs.
• Adapt to extreme temperature changes, outdoor conditions, and prolonged exposure.
• Qualified and physically able to drive regular passenger vehicles to visit work locations.
