Physical Oceanography Model Inventory Coordinator

Employment is contingent upon successful completion of all University of Southern Mississippi pre-employment requirements. The selected candidate must be eligible to obtain and maintain credentials required for access to Stennis Space Center.
About the Role
The Physical Oceanography Model Inventory Coordinator will identify physical oceanography models throughout the Gulf of America region, determine the capabilities of each model, and develop a robust inventory. They will work closely with the Gulf of America Coastal Ocean Observing System (GCOOS) program and Mississippi-Alabama Sea Grant Consortium (MASGC) to identify sources of models and develop the inventory. The position reports administratively to the MASGC Director and receives day-to-day technical supervision from GCOOS, with dual supervisory oversight from both organizations.
Responsibilities
- Lead the development of an inventory of physical oceanography models to support MASGC partner, GCOOS.
- Support the GCOOS administrative team and participate in remote and in-person meetings and events in the Gulf region, including joint GCOOS/MASGC project meetings.
- Develop a comprehensive technical report of the physical oceanography model inventory and work with the GCOOS team to create a web interface for sharing the information.
- Help distribute the final technical report and meet all reporting requirements.
- Other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Master’s degree in marine science, physical oceanography, or a related field.
- Knowledge of physical oceanography, coastal processes, ocean observing systems, and numerical modeling applications.
- Knowledge of scientific data management and technical literature review.
- Experience with GIS, data visualization, or scientific software applications.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to organize multiple assignments and work independently.
- Ability to analyze technical information and develop recommendations.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with internal and external partners.
- Ability to travel within the Gulf region as needed.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience using, evaluating, or interpreting physical oceanographic or coastal numerical models.
