About the Role

As a Phlebotomist at St. Mark's Hospital, you will be an integral part of our Laboratory team. We support many different departments and are passionate about providing the best patient care through compassionate, professional interactions and reliable testing.

Responsibilities

  • Receive orders either by telephone or requisition from nursing units or physicians; enter requests on computer by patient number, operator, and tests ordered.
  • Travel to patient site, as necessary, to obtain specimens.
  • Prepare skin site and perform venipuncture and skin punctures according to established aseptic techniques to obtain blood specimens in accordance with physicians' orders.
  • Instruct patients in specimen collection methods and procedures (e.g., urinalysis and bacteriology), and obtain specimens for culture and analysis.
  • Label and record specimens obtained, transport them to the laboratory, and distribute to appropriate laboratory area for analysis.
  • Follow safety guidelines for oneself, patients, visitors, and co-workers; adhere to OSHA standards by wearing personal protective equipment, following universal precautions, and being knowledgeable about bloodborne pathogens if classified as a category I or II employee.
  • Collect blood samples and urine from patients for laboratory testing, including blood cultures.
  • Register specimens and order tests in LIS; prepare and label samples for internal or external testing.
  • Communicate lab test requests and results to appropriate staff, departments, and/or physicians.
  • Collect and document urine drug screens requiring chain of custody.
  • Assist with in-services or training as assigned.
  • Assist with administrative duties within the laboratory.
  • Perform other duties as may be assigned.

Requirements

  • Previous healthcare experience required; laboratory experience and knowledge of aseptic methods and basic medical terminology preferred.
  • Phlebotomy or Medical Assistant certification.
  • Minimum 6 months of phlebotomy experience or completion of a phlebotomy training program.
  • American Red Cross or American Heart Association Basic Life Support Course (BLS or BCLS) certification required within 30 days of hire.
  • Valid driver’s license.
