Personal Care Aide Shift Supervisor

Responsibilities

  • Supervise, support, and provide daily direction to Personal Care Aides.
  • Develop and maintain staff schedules to ensure adequate coverage and continuity of care.
  • Conduct regular staff check-ins, performance coaching, and participation in performance evaluations.
  • Monitor attendance, punctuality, productivity, and adherence to agency policies and procedures.
  • Aid in onboarding, training, and mentoring of new PCA staff.
  • Facilitate shift handoffs and team communication to ensure continuity of resident care.
  • Participate in recruitment activities, including interviews and candidate recommendations.
  • Ensure staff maintain required certifications, training, and compliance documentation.
  • Oversee delivery of personal care services including assistance with bathing, grooming, dressing, toileting, mobility, feeding, and other ADLs.
  • Ensure services are delivered in accordance with individualized care plans and resident preferences.
  • Conduct routine observations of care delivery and provide feedback to staff regarding quality and best practices.
  • Monitor documentation for completeness, accuracy, and timeliness.
  • Review incident reports and ensure appropriate follow-up and reporting.
  • Observe and respond to changes in resident condition and communicate concerns promptly to clinical and social service staff.
  • Promote resident choice, dignity, independence, and person-centered care practices.
  • Care Coordination:
    • Collaborate with Social Workers, nurses, healthcare providers, families, and building staff to support resident well-being.
    • Participate in interdisciplinary team meetings, care conferences, and service planning discussions.
    • Assist in developing, updating, and implementing resident care plans.
    • Serve as a resource to PCA staff regarding resident care needs, behavioral concerns, and service delivery challenges.
    • Ensure effective communication among all stakeholders involved in resident care.
  • Compliance & Safety:
    • Ensure compliance with infection control standards, universal precautions, and PPE requirements.
    • Promote safe resident handling, transfer techniques, and injury prevention practices.
    • Identify environmental hazards and implement corrective actions as appropriate.
    • Maintain confidentiality and professional boundaries in accordance with HIPAA and agency standards.
    • Participate in audits, inspections, and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Direct Service Support:
    • Provide direct personal care coverage when staffing needs require.
    • Assist residents during emergencies or service interruptions.
    • Support residents with activities that promote engagement, wellness, and independence.

    Requirements

    • Demonstrated leadership and supervisory skills with the ability to motivate and support staff.
    • Strong knowledge of personal care services, Activities of Daily Living (ADLs), and person-centered care practices.
    • Knowledge of infection control, universal precautions, and safe transfer techniques.
    • Ability to assess service quality and implement corrective action when needed.
    • Strong organizational, scheduling, and time-management skills.
    • Ability to communicate effectively with residents, families, staff, and external providers.
    • Excellent documentation, observation, and reporting skills.
    • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
    • Compassionate, professional, and calm under pressure.
    • Basic computer proficiency including electronic documentation systems, scheduling software, and Microsoft Office applications.

    Qualifications

    • High School Diploma or GED required.
    • Home Health Aide (HHA), Personal Care Aide (PCA), Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), or comparable certification preferred.
    • CPR/First Aid Certification required or ability to obtain within a specified timeframe.
    • Minimum three (3) years of experience providing personal care services to older adults or individuals with disabilities.
    • Minimum one (1) year of supervisory, lead, or team coordination experience preferred.
    • Experience working in supportive housing, home care, assisted living, nursing home, hospital, or community-based settings preferred.
