Part-Time Faculty: Writing and Composition Program Instructor, English

About the role

The English Department of Fordham University accepts applications for part-time Non-Tenure Track (NTT) faculty to teach in its first-year Writing & Composition Program on a rolling basis. Successful candidates may be offered up to two sections of Composition II, a required Core course that focuses on rhetorical inquiry and research-based writing; or Composition I, which helps students build comfort with college-level writing through attention to writing process, rhetorical reading, and critical language awareness.

At Fordham, we view writing as an essential foundation of students’ first-year experience and the undergraduate education more broadly. Our Composition courses aim to introduce diverse forms, purposes, and genres of writing that will help students understand the power of rhetoric and develop their abilities to communicate for a range of academic, professional, and public purposes. Composition courses are generally capped at 16 to support the Jesuit principle of cura personalis, care for the whole person.

We seek instructors who are familiar with current, research-based best practices in college writing pedagogy, especially inclusive and antiracist approaches, and who can apply them to foster engaging, equitable teaching and learning environments in concert with Fordham’s Jesuit mission and its strategic plan to educate for racial justice. We strongly encourage candidates to center their writing teaching experience, philosophy, and practice in application materials.

Responsibilities

• Teach up to two sections per semester of Composition I or Composition II at either or both of Fordham's two main campuses at Rose Hill (Bronx) and Lincoln Center (Manhattan), based on department need.
• Design and deliver writing instruction aligned with research-based best practices, including revision, peer review, and individual conferencing.
• Foster inclusive and equitable learning environments that support diverse student populations.
• Occasionally teach Texts and Contexts (a Core course in literary studies and analysis) or Advanced Literature Core electives, if qualified and needed.

Requirements

• A Terminal degree (PhD or MFA) in hand.
• A minimum of one year experience teaching first-year writing courses at the college or university level.
• Experience successfully working with and teaching culturally and linguistically diverse students.
• Demonstrated commitment to student-centered best practices in the teaching of writing.

Pay

The per-course rate for new instructors as of August 1st, 2023 is $7,950. Part-time NTT faculty may teach a maximum of two courses per semester.

Schedule

Courses are offered at Fordham’s Rose Hill (Bronx) and Lincoln Center (Manhattan) campuses. Part-time NTT faculty may teach at either or both campuses based on department need, with priority often given to Rose Hill due to larger student body.
