Nursing Assistant - Emergency Department - Day/Evening

Part-time (24 hours biweekly) – Day/Evening shift (7:00 a.m. – 7:30 p.m.), including every third weekend and every other holiday at WellSpan Ephrata Community Hospital's Emergency Department in Ephrata, PA.

About the role

The Emergency Department sees approximately 30,000 patients annually and consists of 29 beds, including a 6-bed secure behavioral health area. This role provides clinical support to patient care staff by performing a variety of duties related to patient care, including vital signs, assisting with activities of daily living, inventory and supply management, and performing assigned tasks such as EKGs, Point-of-Care testing, phlebotomy, and splinting.

Responsibilities

• Provides general nursing care and personal care assistance to patients, including bathing, dressing, eating, changing bed linens, toileting, and positioning.
• Assists in the preparation and transportation of patients for tests and procedures.
• Monitors patient condition levels and reports changes to the Registered Nurse.
• Documents in ECare, including pain scale, input and output, removal of foley catheters, vital signs, and reports abnormal values to the RN.
• Collects specimens such as blood, urine, or sputum using approved techniques and procedures.
• Obtains and documents temperature, blood pressure, weight, respiration, pulse, and pulse oxygen.
• Sets up and removes equipment and supplies; ensures equipment is functioning properly and stored appropriately.
• Performs EKGs and/or Point-of-Care testing, including blood glucose, hemocult, and specific gravity testing; reports glucose to RN.
• Runs special errands as required and responds to call lights.
• Ensures patient rooms, nursing areas, and supply carts are stocked with appropriate items at required levels; maintains par levels of supplies in the Emergency Department.
• Applies splints and immobilization devices and outfits patients with crutches.
• Maintains a visible presence in the Emergency Department between tasks.
• Establishes rapport with EMS providers, assists RN and EMS with initial patient contact and care upon arrival to ED bed, and directs EMTs and Paramedics to RN for transfer of care reporting.
• Demonstrates caring through spiritual, physical, emotional, psychosocial, and cultural responsiveness, integrated into the plan of care.
• Demonstrates knowledge of growth and development principles over the life span of assigned patient populations; assesses and interprets age-specific data and provides appropriate treatment.
• Provides direct patient care to assigned patient age group(s).
• Complies with all applicable safety regulations, learns the impact of medical errors, and reports actual or potential errors and hazardous conditions.
• Maintains established policies and procedures, objectives, quality assessment, safety, environmental, and infection control standards.
• Participates in educational programs and in-service meetings.
• Provides outstanding service to all customers, fosters teamwork, and practices fiscal responsibility through improvement and innovation.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or GED required.
• Less than 1 year of work experience as a Nursing Assistant, EMT, or Nursing Student.
• Basic Life Support certification required upon hire.
• Certified Nurse Aide certification preferred.
