Responsibilities
- Ensure the Microbiology Laboratory operates smoothly by scheduling staff, reordering supplies, maintaining all security protocols and standards while adhering to the Belmar mission, vision and values.
- Utilize supervisory skills, and lab safety know-how to ensure laboratories are safe and continue to operate.
- Responsible for all aspects of the lab, which includes tracking and monitoring equipment, managing employees, testing execution, and documentation of events.
- Train microbiology laboratory analysts on the correct use of equipment and mentor and discipline lab staff when necessary.
- Oversee samples submitted for testing and help create a testing schedule with the General Manager.
- Ensure tests are completed in a timely manner, accurate, and all documentation is complete and accurate.
- Maintain a schedule that tracks lab equipment used and time for staff members and are responsible for purchasing lab supplies or preparing an ordering list.
- Regular meetings with quality and other department staff
- Implement policies and procedures
- Review, monitor, track and trend technical and employee performance
- Cookordinate and perform on-site training for new and existing staff members
- Perform additional duties as assigned in support of microbiology laboratory operations
- Extend customer service to include all internal and external customers
- Ensure communication of laboratory data and appropriate result reporting
- Release samples to laboratory personnel and communicate due dates and update turnaround times
- Answer questions related to testing, EM procedures, lab applications
- Lead the handling and resolution of complex issues and complaints
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and system regulations to provide a safe operation
- Ensure compliance with all corporate policy procedures
- Expand the lab's research portfolio by helping to develop new research projects and proposals
- Establish and maintain all microbiology laboratory records in accordance with specifications
- Ensure supplies are available as required for laboratory work
- Recommend measures to improve testing procedures, use of equipment, and needs for new equipment
- Monitor, analyze and justify expense and revenue within departments
Qualifications and Education Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in science is preferred or equivalent experience in the field.
- Minimum 3 years in a GMP facility
- Minimum 1 year of supervising employees
- Experience operating laboratory equipment related to microbial ID, endotoxin, bioburden, and sterility testing.
- Use good documentation skills/organizational skills to record lab procedures and results.
- Critical thinking and decision-making skills
- Occupational hazards and standard safety practices
- Familiarity with compendial testing and regulatory guidance.
