About the role

Shift: Monday–Friday or Tuesday–Saturday, 11:00 AM–6:30 PM

The Laboratory Supervisor receives sufficient authority from, and is accountable to, the Business Unit Manager or appointed designate for the successful completion of assigned duties and responsibilities. This position has the authority to take action necessary to carry out the duties and responsibilities, including identifying departures from the quality system or from procedures for performing tests and/or calibrations, so long as such action does not deviate from established company guidelines, is consistent with sound technical and business judgment, and follows laboratory practices. Acts as backup to the Laboratory/Quality Manager in their absence.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates and promotes the company vision
  • Assists the Business Unit Manager in managing daily operations of the microbiology department, including scheduling, supervising, instructing, monitoring, and assisting in the performance of manual and instrumental analyses
  • Performs timely and accurate analysis of samples to meet customer commitments, including sample preparation, analyses, data review and reduction, and providing data interpretation and opinions
  • Has authority to execute a work stoppage in the event of a quality issue requiring the lab to halt operations until an investigation ensures work can safely resume
  • Works with direct supervisor or director to recommence work following a work stoppage
  • Uses appropriate quality measures that meet or exceed government regulations and company requirements when performing assigned tasks
  • Promotes the company image through ethical business practices related to the public and customers
  • Understands and follows Quality System documents relevant to responsibilities (e.g., Quality Manual, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and Test Methods)
  • Performs microbiological testing on client samples using appropriate instruments and techniques as workload requires
  • Troubleshoots equipment/instruments and performs minor repairs; coordinates major repairs with repair personnel and local quality representative
  • Establishes and implements procedures to ensure assigned equipment is properly cleaned, calibrated/standardized, and maintained in good working order, including maintaining equipment operating instructions, manuals, and required logbooks
  • Ensures all regulatory procedures pertaining to sample testing are followed correctly
  • Maintains a neat and accurate record system, including daily records of work performed and quality control results
  • Assists laboratory staff in ensuring analytical work meets quality system requirements
  • Reviews and evaluates test data for technical accuracy, SOP, and test method compliance; performs basic statistical evaluation of data quality and reports values
  • Investigates non-conformances, determines and implements corrective action, and follows up to ensure resolution
  • Reviews and validates technical data to ensure it is ready for reporting
  • Reviews applications, conducts interviews, and makes hiring decisions for positions reporting to this role
  • Trains and documents the training of assigned technical staff on test methods, SOPs, regulations, and laboratory policies/procedures
  • Reviews annually the performance of directly reporting personnel and provides written reviews to the Business Unit Manager for approval
  • Remains current on technical, industry, and business advancements and trends as suggested by the Business Unit Manager
  • Maintains readiness and willingness to respond to the queries and needs of clients, staff, and coworkers; ensures clients are kept informed and their needs are met
  • Adheres to all pertinent company health, safety, and environmental regulations
  • Performs other duties as assigned
  • Conducts all activities in a safe and efficient manner

Requirements

  • High School diploma plus 5+ years of laboratory experience
  • 2+ years of supervisory experience in a related field
  • Experience in laboratory procedures, data analysis, computer operations, mathematics, and technical/business writing
