About the role

A STS Tax Senior Manager, State and Local Taxation advises clients on tax implications related to their business objectives, recommends alternative courses of action, and identifies methods for complying with tax regulations. This role involves marketing, networking, and business development, as well as representing clients before tax authorities on contested issues.

Responsibilities

  • Researches complex situations requiring tax research, analyzing findings, and preparing detailed reports.
  • Conducts detailed reviews of tax returns to identify significant state tax issues and provides responses to notices from state taxing authorities.
  • Provides tax consulting services, drafting tax memorandums, opinions, and other documentation on various tax issues.
  • Determines tax planning processes and ensures tax engagement letters are adopted before work begins on engagements.
  • Manages client expectations and assists in developing consultative selling strategies.
  • Represents clients before tax authorities on contested issues and utilizes tax-related software such as GoSystems and tax research databases.
  • Applies industry standards and firm policies to ensure effective and efficient delivery of tax services.
  • Develops new or improved tax strategies and suggests marketing approaches for new client acquisition.
  • Supervises the day-to-day workload of STS SALT Managers, Senior Associates, and Associates on assigned engagements, ensuring adherence to deadlines and quality standards.
  • Evaluates the performance of supervised staff and assists in their professional development.
  • Delivers performance feedback and completes performance evaluations for supervised staff.

Requirements

Eight or more years of prior experience in state and local/multistate experience is required. Prior experience supervising tax professionals on a project or engagement basis, preparing and/or reviewing tax provisions, and corporate taxation, consolidations, and partnerships is preferred. A CPA certification or other relevant certification is preferred. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, specifically Excel and Word, and exposure to and familiarity with standard tax applications and research tools are also required.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or other relevant field.
  • Masters degree in Accounting/Taxation or J.D. preferred.
  • Exposure to and familiarity with standard tax applications and research tools.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Solid organizational skills, especially ability to meet project deadlines with a focus on details.
  • Ability to successfully multi-task while working independently or within a group environment.
  • Proven ability to work in a deadline-driven environment and handle multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Capacity to build and maintain strong relationships with internal and client personnel.
  • Executive presence and ability to act as primary contact on assigned engagements.
  • Advanced knowledge of appropriate application of tax standards to ensure effective and efficient delivery of tax services.
  • Advanced knowledge of sources of relevant information utilized in tax filings.
  • Advanced knowledge and understanding of cause / effect for taxable conditions on clients and the potential tax issues.

The salary range for this position is $99,750 - $262,500, with specific ranges for different locations.
