About the role

A STS Tax Senior Manager, State and Local Taxation advises clients on tax implications, recommends courses of action, and identifies compliance methods. This role involves marketing, business development, and tax compliance, consulting, and controversy representation.

Responsibilities

  • Researches complex situations requiring tax research, analyzes findings, and prepares detailed reports.
  • Conducts detailed tax return reviews, responds to notices from state taxing authorities, and provides exam support.
  • Drafts tax memorandums, opinions, and documentation, applies tax consulting specialties, and collaborates with other STS professionals.
  • Manages client expectations, develops consultative selling strategies, and manages engagements.
  • Represents clients in tax authority disputes, utilizes tax software, and negotiates settlements and disclosures.
  • Provides technical client service, drafts technical memoranda, and conducts negotiation of settlements and audits.
  • Develops new tax strategies, reviews tax implications, and suggests marketing approaches for new client acquisition.
  • Supervises STS SALT Managers, Senior Associates, and Associates, evaluates performance, and delivers performance feedback.

Requirements

Eight or more years of prior experience in state and local/multistate taxation, experience supervising tax professionals, and proficiency in tax software are required. A bachelor's degree in accounting or related field is typically required, with a master's degree or JD preferred. CPA certification or relevant certification is preferred.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or related field
  • Masters degree in Accounting/Taxation or J.D. preferred
  • Eight or more years of prior experience in state and local/multistate taxation
  • Prior experience supervising tax professionals on a project or engagement basis
  • Prior experience preparing and/or reviewing tax provisions
  • Prior experience with corporate taxation, consolidations, and partnerships
  • CPA certification or other relevant certification preferred
  • Software proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, specifically Excel and Word
  • Familiarity with standard tax applications and research tools
