About the role

A STS Tax Senior Manager, State and Local Taxation advises clients on tax implications, recommends courses of action, and identifies compliance methods. This role involves marketing, business development, and tax compliance, consulting, and controversy representation.

Responsibilities

  • Researches complex situations requiring tax research, analyzes findings, and writes detailed reports.
  • Conducts detailed reviews of tax returns, responds to notices from state taxing authorities, and provides exam support.
  • Drafts tax memorandums, opinions, and documentation, applies tax consulting specialties, and collaborates with other STS professionals.
  • Manages engagements, develops consultative selling strategies, and manages client expectations.
  • Represents clients in tax authority disputes, utilizes tax-related software, and negotiates settlements and representations.
  • Develops new tax strategies, prepares tax accrual workpapers, and understands and applies tax standards and firm policies.
  • Reviews tax implications, identifies alternative courses of action, and suggests marketing approaches for new client acquisition.
  • Serves as a supervisor, overseeing the workload of managers, associates, and interns, training them on relevant software, evaluating performance, and providing feedback.

Requirements

Eight or more years of prior experience in state and local/multistate taxation, supervising tax professionals, preparing/reviewing tax provisions, and corporate taxation, consolidations, and partnerships. CPA certification or relevant certification preferred. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, specifically Excel and Word, and familiarity with tax applications and research tools.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or related field required.
  • Masters degree in Accounting/Taxation or JD preferred.
  • Exposure to and familiarity with standard tax applications and research tools preferred.

  • Solid organizational skills, especially for meeting project deadlines.
  • Ability to manage a team of tax professionals and delegate work assignments.
  • Capacity to build and maintain strong relationships with internal and client personnel.
  • Executive presence and ability to act as primary contact on assigned engagements.
  • Advanced knowledge of appropriate application of tax standards.
  • Advanced knowledge of sources of relevant information utilized in tax filings.
  • Advanced knowledge and understanding of cause/effect for taxable conditions.
