Position Summary
Performs applied techniques for various chemical, microscopic, immunologic and/or microbiological tests to obtain data for use in the diagnosis and treatment of disease. Works as a high functioning multi-tasker between all departments of the Laboratory, including Blood Bank, Hematology, Chemistry, and limited Serology and Microbiology. Receives and/or obtains specimens for laboratory analysis.
Qualifications
- EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION: A Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology or; In lieu of bachelor’s degree, an associate degree with proof of license accepted/accredited by the states of NY, FL, or CA. American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) certified or eligible as a Medical Technologist or ASCP Categorical Certification specific for laboratory section employed in (H, C, M, BB).
- MUST PROVIDE EDUCATION TRANSCRIPT PRIOR TO START OF EMPLOYMENT.
- Experience: At least one (1) year of clinical laboratory experience is preferred. Phlebotomy experience is preferred.

- Knowledgeable in laboratory automation and information systems.
- Access to reliable transportation to travel between multiple work sites; and travel is required in order to perform essential duties.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Demonstrates efficient operation and knowledge of basic instrument theory of operation and function of components.
- Multi tasks in a high performing way between all Laboratory departments.
- Maintains competency in Blood Bank.
- Maintains competency in Hematology and Coagulation.
- Maintains competency in Chemistry.
- Maintains competency in Microbiology and Serology on a limited basis (gram staining, and stat Serology).
- Adheres to turn-around-time standards for the Laboratory.
- Troubleshoots instruments, when necessary, in accordance with instrument specific manuals.
- Takes responsibility for maintenance and troubleshooting functions and performs full assessment of problems as they arise.
- Assumes responsibility for instrument or pipette calibration functions.
- Affords assistance in coordinating proficiency testing results.
- Performs section back-up procedures in accordance with the specific instrument.
- Follows department policy and procedures for Quality Control and takes action as necessary when outliers exist.
- Exhibits technical expertise by assessing results are accurate with no technical data amendments that would affect patient care.
- Uses critical thinking skills when assessing patient results and makes good sound judgment before releasing results.
- Takes responsibility for ordering and assigning testing for CAP surveys.
