Responsibilities

  • Affords assistance to the physician in assessing patient needs based on information gathered through history, observation, physical exam, telephone triage, and analysis of diagnostic results.
  • Executes direct patient care, including triage, assessment, procedures, treatments, patient education, discharge, and follow-up instructions.
  • Prepares patients for visits by the provider, collects and documents pertinent information through communication with patients and their families, such as vital signs, history, and chief complaints.
  • Prepares and documents charts, scans necessary documents in the patient’s medical record as required, performs specialized tests like electrocardiography, pulmonary function tests, sleep studies, Holter monitors, and certain laboratory procedures as needed.
  • Administers medications as directed by the physician, assists providers with treatments and procedures, schedules testing and referral appointments as instructed by the provider, and consults with patients via phone regarding their issues or referrals.
  • Follows up with patients as necessary, cleans and straightens examination rooms according to OSHA standards, maintains medical supplies, checks expiration dates on medications and vaccines, and disposes of outdated medications.
  • Develops and maintains a working knowledge of all equipment needed to perform duties, schedules and reschedules appointments as needed, and assists patients in signing up for MyChart and encourages their use as a primary means of communication with McLeod Health.
  • Contributes to a learning environment by encouraging colleagues’ formal and informal continuing education, actively participates in departmental quality improvement projects, promotes the practice mission and philosophy, and projects a positive image.

Qualifications

  • Basic Life Support certification must be obtained within 90 days of hire.
