As the Outpatient Clinical Documentation (CDI) Manager, you’ll lead the strategy, people, and processes behind one of the most critical functions in modern healthcare: ensuring documentation tells the full, accurate story of every patient encounter. You’ll manage and inspire a skilled CDI team, collaborate directly with physicians and clinical leaders, and serve as the organization’s expert on documentation standards, coding compliance, HCC/Risk Adjustment, and revenue integrity. Your leadership will influence enterprise-wide initiatives, shape system design, and drive consistent, high-quality documentation across all facilities.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the strategy, people, and processes for outpatient clinical documentation improvement (CDI).
  • Manage and inspire a skilled CDI team.
  • Collaborate with physicians and clinical leaders to ensure accurate and compliant documentation.
  • Serve as the organization’s expert on documentation standards, coding compliance, HCC/Risk Adjustment, and revenue integrity.
  • Influence enterprise-wide initiatives and shape system design for consistent, high-quality documentation.
  • Conduct basic research, analyze and interpret data, evaluate processes, and propose improvements.
  • Develop strong working and collaborative relationships with physician leaders in clinical and academic settings.
  • Ensure compliance with privacy and medical record regulations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration, Healthcare Administration, or a related field with a medical focus (Nursing preferred).
  • Five (5) years of clinical operations experience in Acute or Ambulatory Nursing and/or Coding and CDI experience directly related to revenue coding and reimbursement for hospital or physician services.
  • Significant project management experience.
  • Outstanding analytical, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to teach complex technical/analytical concepts to physicians, system leadership, management, and staff.
  • Ability to manage, coordinate, and lead multiple initiatives simultaneously.
  • Ability to estimate time frames and meet projected deadlines.
  • Ability to understand and lead change.
  • Demonstrated clinical and/or coding competence.
  • Experience in all areas of medical record functions, including privacy and compliance regulations.
  • Strong knowledge of ICD-10 CM/PCS conventions, rules, and regulations.

Qualifications

  • Registered Nurse (RN or BSN) and/or Coding Certification required.
  • Coding Certification may include CPC, CCS, RHIT, or RHIA.
