Maintenance Worker II or Maintenance Worker III (Public Works)
About the role
This position will fill one of the following assignments based on operational and department need:
- Sidewalks Crew: Typical work schedule is Tuesday - Friday : 6:30 AM - 5:00 PM
- Concrete Crew: Typical work schedule is Monday - Friday : 7:00 AM - 3:30 PM
- Street Marking/Asphalt Crew: Typical work schedule is Monday - Thursday : 6:30 AM - 5:00 PM
- Refuse Collection & Disposal Crew: Typical work schedule is Tuesday – Friday : 6:30 AM – 5:00 PM
Responsibilities
Assists with maintenance, repair, and/or construction projects.
Supports and completes maintenance and repair assignments according to required specifications.
Supports the preparation of job sites for the maintenance and repair of infrastructure, facilities, and/or grounds.
Operates hand tools and power equipment associated with maintenance, repair, custodial, and construction operations.
Cleans up and restores work areas on assignments.
Attends meetings concerning safety, procedures, and practices.
May operate a vehicle in the performance of duties.
Requirements
Subject to be called back to work to the City in emergencies or as needed to provide necessary services to the public. Must have the ability to be contacted and respond based on Departmental guidelines.
Responsible for appropriate use and maintenance of City equipment, tools and other resources including work time.
Regular and reliable attendance.
Performs additional duties to support operational requirements as apparent or assigned.
Qualifications
High school diploma or GED AND general knowledge of maintenance, construction, and repair work including knowledge of mechanical/automotive equipment.
One (1) year of work experience in general maintenance, construction, and repair work including knowledge of mechanical/automotive equipment.
An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered in lieu of the specific requirements listed above.
Must be at least 18 years of age.
Subject to emergency and stand-by call and must respond within minimum response time to City facility based on Departmental guidelines. (For Utilities 40-minute response time)
Skills
Basic knowledge of the methods and tools used in maintenance and repair work.
Basic knowledge of maintenance, repair and construction activities.
Basic knowledge of mechanical and equipment operation.
Basic knowledge of occupational hazards and safety requirements of the trade.
Ability to understand and apply basic instructions and applications.
Basic: ability to understand the meaning of commonly used multi-syllable words and simple paragraphs. Comprehends simple written instructions, work orders, construction plans, drawings, signs, and notices.
Basic: writing skill to provide information, documentation, and/or record on maintenance needs, repairs, and/or series of numbers and addresses.
Basic: ability to perform the four basic arithmetic operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication, division.
Routine: Regular & routine interaction involving providing or exchanging basic information, explain issues and concerns, listen to others and to identify maintenance and repair issues or problems. Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with co-workers.
Requires Immediate Direction: Normally performs the duty assignment after receiving detailed instructions as to methods, procedures, and desired end results with little room for deviation. The immediate supervisor may, at times, provide close and constant review.
Basic: understanding to be able to provide preventive and routine maintenance and repair of assigned area.
No budgetary/fiscal responsibilities.
No responsibility for direction or supervision of others.
Performs work as part of a team.
Performs duties under sometimes strict time constraints.
Subject to weather and non-weather emergency response, call backs, and standby call.
May require a non-traditional work schedule.
May require additional hours outside normal schedule.

Physical Demands:
- Heavy Work: Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 25 pounds of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.
- Ability to perform extensive manual labor for extended periods including balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking pushing/pulling, heavy lifting, gross and fine motor skills. Adequate vision and hearing.

- Ability to observe details at close range (within a few feet of the observer).
- Typically requires operation of construction, repair, and specialized equipment; and any other equipment as appropriate or as assigned.
- Work is performed outside, in a vehicle, or on equipment where there is exposure to inclement weather, extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting, dirt and allergens, fumes or airborne particulars, fuels/gases, electrical currents, chemicals, high/precarious places, traffic/roadways, moving mechanical hazards, confined spaces, and uneven terrain.
- Expected to use appropriate protective equipment for the assigned task (hard hat, safety vest, steel-toe shoes, etc.); and any other equipment as apparent or assigned.
- The noise level is usually loud to very loud.
Pay
Starting offer is based on applicable education, experience, and internal equity: - Maintenance Worker II: preferred hiring range is $19.51 to $21.62 an hour ($40,580.80 - $44,969.60 Annually). - Maintenance Worker III: preferred hiring range is $20.86 to $25.65 an hour ($43,388.80 - $53,352.00 Annually).
