JOB SUMMARY

Under general supervision, performs advanced skilled work in the maintenance, repair, and construction of Town streets, rights-of-way, drainage facilities, traffic control devices, and related public infrastructure. Serves as the lead worker for assigned maintenance crews by coordinating daily work activities, providing technical guidance, demonstrating proper work methods, and assisting with work assignments to ensure projects are completed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with established standards.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Serves as the lead worker for assigned maintenance crews by coordinating daily field activities and assisting with workflow to ensure projects are completed efficiently.
  • Provides technical guidance, instruction, and on-the-job training to maintenance staff regarding equipment operation, maintenance techniques, safety practices, and work procedures.
  • Assists the Streets Superintendent by communicating daily work assignments, monitoring work progress, and reporting operational issues.
  • Demonstrates proper work methods and promotes safe, efficient work practices.
  • Operates a variety of medium and heavy construction equipment including dump trucks, loaders, backhoes, skid steers, rollers, tractors, water trucks, and other specialized equipment requiring a Commercial Driver License.
  • Performs roadway maintenance including asphalt patching, crack sealing, grading, shoulder repair, sign installation, striping, roadside landscaping, and drainage maintenance.
  • Performs emergency response activities including roadway cleanup, storm damage response, debris removal, and traffic incident support.
  • Performs pre-trip inspections, preventive maintenance, and minor servicing of assigned vehicles and equipment.
  • Identifies equipment deficiencies and reports repair needs.
  • Aids in organizing materials, equipment, and resources for daily work activities.
  • Completes work orders, inspection reports, equipment logs, and other required documentation.
  • Affords assistance in training temporary employees or inmate crews as assigned.
  • Performs traffic control activities including placement of signs, barricades, cones, and flagging operations.
  • Provides outstanding customer service to internal and external customers.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Principles, practices, methods, and materials used in street maintenance, roadway construction, and public works operations.
  • Safe operation and preventive maintenance of medium and heavy construction equipment.
  • Traffic control procedures, work zone safety practices, and applicable OSHA and MUTCD standards.
  • Equipment inspection procedures and routine maintenance requirements.
  • Town safety policies, procedures, and operational practices.
  • Operating medium and heavy construction equipment in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Training and providing technical guidance to maintenance employees.
  • Maintaining accurate records and completing reports.
  • Communicating effectively with coworkers, supervisors, contractors, and the public.
  • Leading work crews by providing technical guidance and coordinating daily work assignments without exercising supervisory authority.
  • Reading and interpreting work orders, construction plans, maps, and specifications.
  • Prioritizing multiple assignments while maintaining quality and safety standards.
  • Working independently with limited supervision while exercising sound judgment.
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.
  • Responding effectively to emergency situations and changing operational priorities.
  • Performing physically demanding work in varying weather conditions.
  • Safely lifting and carrying up to 100 pounds.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (G.E.D.).
  • Four (4) years of progressively responsible experience in street maintenance, public works construction, infrastructure maintenance, or a closely related field.
  • Experience operating medium and heavy construction equipment.
  • Demonstrated experience providing technical guidance, mentoring, or leading work crews on construction or maintenance projects.
  • Any equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to perform the essential functions.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience serving as a lead worker or coordinating the work of maintenance crews.
  • Experience operating a variety of medium and heavy construction equipment.
  • Arizona Class A Commercial Driver License (CDL) or additional CDL endorsements.
  • Traffic control, OSHA, or other job-related safety certifications.
