About the role

This Maintenance Worker position involves performing manual labor, maintenance, minor repairs, and equipment operation in the maintenance, repair, and construction of the City’s Public Works systems and facilities.

Responsibilities

  • Perform maintenance, construction, and repair of City streets, sidewalks, waterlines, sewer-lines, facilities, systems, and equipment.
  • Operate a variety of equipment based on assignment; front-end loader, dump truck, flatbed truck, snowplow/sander, street sweeper, vactor truck or jet truck.
  • Operate a backhoe or road grader and a variety of equipment to install, maintain, clean, grade, and repair sidewalks, roadways, bridges, alleys, and install/repair water/sewer services or mainlines.
  • Remove and repair damaged roadways and sidewalk areas. Prepare streets for overlays and slurry seals; patches, fill potholes, pave and sweep.
  • Repair, replace or install street name or traffic signs and traffic/pedestrian lights. Perform minor maintenance on traffic control devices.
  • Operate striping equipment to designate markings on City streets (e.g., centerlines, crosswalks, school zones, etc.).
  • Inspect and evaluate problems/conditions of the sewer mainlines using CCTV inspection equipment.
  • Install, maintain and repair, storm drains, drain tiles, catch basins, hydrants, manholes and water mainlines.
  • Locate and close valves to permit repairs to mainlines and services; operate tapping machines in the tapping of water mainlines under pressure and install services.
  • Flush waterlines and repair valves including repacking, changing stems and replacing all working parts. Install and repair water meters and meter boxes.
  • Maintain accurate records; use computer based instrumentation and control systems for record maintenance as needed.
  • Operate, monitor, and maintain pumps, valves, aeration equipment, and other equipment relevant to job assignment. Inspect, adjust, and replace components as needed.
  • Use a variety of hand and power-operated tools and equipment; such as shovels, picks, power saws, drills, jackhammers, and compressors.
  • Maintain and clean equipment.
  • Subject to 24-hour call back for emergency conditions.

Requirements

  • Must have at least six (6) months of experience performing manual labor, maintenance, minor repairs, light and heavy equipment operation, and the training necessary to perform the assigned functions in the assigned division(s).
  • Must have at least two (2) years of experience performing manual labor, maintenance, minor repairs, light and heavy equipment operation, and the training necessary to perform the assigned functions in the assigned division(s).
  • Must have at least three (3) years of work experience performing manual labor, maintenance, minor repairs, light and heavy equipment operation, and the training necessary to perform the assigned functions in the assigned division(s).
  • Display proficiency with tools and equipment typically used in a maintenance or construction environment.

Qualifications

  • Any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the applicant with the knowledge, skills and abilities required to perform the job.
  • A high school diploma or G.E.D.
  • Must obtain a valid Washington State driver’s license with a Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with Tanker endorsement within twelve (12) months of employment.
  • Must obtain a Washington State Flagger Certification during employment.
  • Must obtain a current First Aid/CPR Certification during employment.

Skills

  • Proficiency with tools and equipment typically used in a maintenance or construction environment.
  • Ability to operate a variety of equipment including front-end loader, dump truck, flatbed truck, snowplow/sander, street sweeper, vactor truck or jet truck, backhoe, road grader, and a variety of other equipment.
  • Experience with CCTV inspection equipment, storm drain installation, valve operations, water line flushing, and pump/meter maintenance.
  • Strong physical stamina and ability to perform heavy lifting, pushing, pulling, and bending.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills.

Pay

Compensation is commensurate with experience.

Schedule

Position requires flexibility to work outdoors in all weather conditions, heavy physical labor, working around traffic and equipment, possible confined space work, and participation in after-hours emergency call-back or on-call rotation.
