Public Works Maintenance Worker
Essential Job Functions
- Bulky Item pick up throughout city limits from streets, alleys, and city-owned properties.
- Weeds mitigation, small tree trimming, curb and gutter clearance, curb painting and crosswalk painting using a paint machine, small area concrete repair and tripping hazard mitigation, sign maintenance, reporting of any utility/graffiti and other related issues using city app.
- Affords assistance in resolving city staff facility requests and concerns (e.g., replacing light bulbs, fixtures, door issues, item relocation).
- Performs required labor involved in construction and maintenance of projects as part of a crew, including pavement cutting, ditch digging, manhole and line cleaning, main and pipe repair, laying pipe, trenching, and backfilling.
Minimum Qualifications
- Knowledge of General operations, services, and processes within a municipal public works department.
- Principles of Safety and Practices and communication (OSHA Regulations).
- Basic Math and Record Keeping, Computer Skills.
Skills and Abilities
- Utilize equipment which includes standard power and hand tools, pressure washer, paint spray gun and machine, two-way radio, drills, saws, roto-routers, grinders, landscaping tools, furniture movers, hand tools, electrical meters, energy management system, department vehicles, personal computer, smart phone, copier, calculator, fax machine and other standard office equipment.
- Comprehend and correctly use a variety of informational, technical, regulatory documents, including assessor’s maps, tract maps, sewer plans, survey notebooks, public works improvement plans, billing and invoices, policy and procedures, policy memos, resolutions, and municipal ordinances and codes.
- Communicate effectively in a courteous and competent manner verbally and in writing with city administrators, officials, co-workers, contractors, citizens, other agency personnel, and engineers/contractors.
- Operate a variety of automated office machines including copier, fax machine, telephone, personal computer, cell phone and peripheral equipment and typewriter.
- Use a variety of drafting and clerical tools and supplies.
- Prioritize daily duties, projects and assignments.
Experience and Education
Any combination of equivalent education, training and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
- At least One Year work experience in a maintenance related field.
- Equivalent to High School Diploma or GED.
Licensing/Certification Requirements
- An excellent driving record and possession and retention of a valid California Class C driver's license is a condition of employment.
- Possession of a valid California driver's license is required by the date of hire and during employment.
Working Conditions
- Work is performed in office and field environments.
- May be subject to repetitive motion such as typing, data entry, and vision to monitor.
- May be subject to exposure to extreme weather conditions, hazardous chemicals, fumes, infectious diseases, toxic waste, air and water borne pathogens, unsafe and unhealthy building conditions, and rough or unstable terrain.
- May be subject to extended periods of walking, driving, pushing, pulling, bending, reaching, kneeling, climbing ladders, lifting, or carrying building materials.
- Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.
- Will be required to drive City vehicles.
Retirement Program (CALPERS)
Eligible employees will be enrolled in the City's retirement program through CalPERS. 2% @ 55 formula for classic California Public Employees' Retirement System (CalPERS) members. Under the Public Employees' Pension Reform Act of 2013 (PEPRA), effective January 1, 2013, all "new members" will be subject to the 2.0% @ 62 benefit formula which also requires a three-year final compensation (the highest average annual pensionable compensation earned by a member during a period of at least 36 months) with an early retirement age of 52. A "New Member" is defined as: (1) A new hire that is brought into CalPERS membership for the first time on or after January 1, 2013, and who has no prior membership in any other California public retirement system. (2) A new hire who is brought into CalPERS membership for the first time on or after January 1, 2013, and who is not eligible for reciprocity with another California public retirement system. (3) A member who established CalPERS membership prior to January 1, 2013, and who is hired by a different CalPERS employer after January 1, 2013, after a break in service of greater than six months. CalPERS refers to all members that do not fit within the definition of a new member as "classic members". All existing CalPERS members as of December 31, 2012, will retain the existing benefit levels for future service with the same employer. Effective January 1, 2013, PEPRA prohibited employers from paying any portion of a "new member's" member contribution rate. All non-classic California Public Employees' Retirement System (CalPERS) members must pay 50% of total normal cost as employee contribution rate.
Health Plan
Effective January 1, 2022, the City shall contribute an amount up to 100% of the coverage amount for the Kaiser Permanente plan that corresponds to the employee’s coverage (includes dependents). For example, an employee with Blue Shield insurance, the employee shall pay for the monthly premium that may exceed that of the Kaiser Permanente family plan.
Vision and Dental
City paid coverage.
Holidays
12 paid holidays per year + 2 Floating Holidays. City services and facilities are closed from Christmas Day (Christmas Eve beginning December 2023) through New Year's Day. Employees are required to utilize their own time.
Sick Leave
Employees will accrue 2.76 hours of sick leave per pay period; 72 hours annual accrual.
Vacation
Employees will accrue vacation leave at the following rates based upon the length of service: Eight (8) hours per month or 12 days per year during the first five (5) years of service.
Deferred Compensation 457 Plan
Employees may voluntarily participate in the available 457 deferred compensation plan.
Credit Union
Membership offers access to low interest loans.
Probationary Period
New employees serve a twelve-month probationary period.
