Public Works Maintenance Worker

Essential Duties

• Inspect and clear or clean debris from parking lots, walkways, ditches, alleys, streets and storm drains.
• Manage plant growth in and near roadways and medians.
• Inspect and clear obstructions from roadways and storm drains; perform work in emergency situations as required.
• Place street barricades and cones prior to the performance of repair activities; direct traffic around work sites; utilize proper safety precautions related to all work performed; alert others to any dangerous situations.
• Shovel and spread asphalt and asphalt base or other street surface materials used in patching, repairing and reconstructing streets.
• Read and interpret basic maps and blueprints.
• Operate various equipment such as pick-up trucks, saws, small tools, power tools, plotters, concrete mixers and weed eaters.
• Assist in performing basic construction, maintenance and repair work involving concrete, drainage structures, retaining walls, pipe lines, masonry, grading, pavers, metal work, wood work, fencing, and irrigation.
• Assist in painting and striping City streets and curbs; install City signposts, signs and pavement markers.
• May assist with the design, fabrication, installation and maintenance of quality traffic signs.
• May assist with dead animal removal.

Minimum Qualifications

• Must possess a high school diploma or GED and one (1) year of paid full-time experience in street maintenance and repair, or construction work, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

• Operating maintenance equipment including small power tools, mowers, line trimmers, blowers, tractors and small dump trucks.

• Identifying proper equipment and safety gear needed for each project.
• Reading and interpreting basic maps, written directions and work orders.

Pre-employment Requirements

• Candidates who are selected for appointment may be required to be fingerprinted, if 18 or older; successfully complete a background investigation, employment verification and may be subject to a drug/alcohol test, medical, polygraph and/or psychological evaluation.
• Candidates who are appointed will be required to possess a valid drivers license to operate a vehicle in Arizona, or meet th transportation needs of the position.

License/Certifications

• Must obtain an Arizona Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with tanker endorsement within one year of appointment.

Physical Demands and Working Environment

• Work includes walking and operation of a vehicle, landscaping equipment and various power tools.
• Working outdoors in extreme heat and or cold weather temperatures.
• Requires moderate exertion and lifting, carrying objects between 50 to 100 pounds, repeated bending, stooping and reaching above the head daily.
• Performs construction and maintenance functions requiring visual and manual dexterity and precision measurements and continuous repetitive arm, hand and eye movement.
• May be exposed to high voltage and hazardous chemicals.
• Work a varying work schedule which includes nights, weekends, holidays and extended hours during emergencies.
