Litigation and Claims Manager

About the role

We are seeking an experienced and detail-oriented professional to join our team as a Litigation and Claims Manager at our Kansas City headquarters. This critical role will manage employment and liability claims litigation and workers’ compensation by working with inside and outside counsel to resolve complex cases efficiently, control costs, and minimize risk while ensuring compliance with policies and regulations.

Responsibilities

• Case Management: Manage the lifecycle of litigated claims, including complex, high-exposure, or serious injury cases.
• Strategy & Oversight: Develop and implement litigation strategies, manage budgets, and hold law firms accountable.
• Liaison & Communication: Act as a key contact for employees while working with the claim team, attorneys, management, and vendors, ensuring clear communication on case status and developments.
• Staff & Vendor Management: Provide oversight and manage expectations for claims adjusters, provide training, and manage relationships with outside law firms. Collaborate with internal stakeholders and implement strategies for litigation and claims management.
• Investigation & Evaluation: Investigate claims, evaluate damages, determine liability, and evaluate accuracy of reserves.
• Negotiation & Settlement: Work with the Director of Workers’ Compensation and Compliance and Chief Legal Office to develop negotiation and settlement discussions, representing the company at mediations and trials.
• Process Improvement: Identify opportunities to improve claims handling processes and ensure adherence to policies and procedures. Build a records retention system to ensure claims documentation of all cases, complying with legal and regulatory requirements.
• Other duties as assigned.

Reports to the Senior Director of Workers’ Compensation and Compliance. This is an on-site position.

Requirements

• Juris Doctor (JD) or equivalent legal degree from an accredited institution.
• Active license to practice law (in any US jurisdiction; Missouri or Kansas preferred).
• At least five (5) years of experience in workers’ compensation litigation, employment litigation, liability claims, or a closely related field.
• Strong legal knowledge in civil litigation and insurance principles.
• Excellent communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills.
• Strong leadership and team management abilities.
• Detail-oriented with strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Must be at least 18 years of age or older.
• Must be authorized to work for ANY employer in the U.S. (We are unable to provide visa sponsorship at this time.)
• Qualified candidates will be required to successfully complete a background check.
