About the role

This is professional library work that involves management of library branch services or system-wide internal operation division (e.g., collection development, collection processing, circulation, and facilities).

Responsibilities

  • Allocates funds, formulates policies, solves administrative problems, and recommends the hiring and termination of subordinate staff.
  • Exercises considerable independent judgment in the performance of assigned duties and receives general guidance from a supervisor.
  • Delivers customer services to all library users, both internally and externally, including responding to customer comments and complaints.
  • Captures and analyzes community needs and plans, develops, and delivers appropriate programs for targeted groups.
  • Manages strategic partnerships by cultivating relationships with community organizations, schools, government entities, and local businesses to enhance library services and expand community impact.
  • Develops and implements community engagement programs by leading the design and execution of programs and outreach efforts that address the unique needs of diverse communities, promoting equity, accessibility, and inclusion.
  • Oversees staff development and training programs by identifying and implementing professional development opportunities for library staff, ensuring knowledge of current trends, technology, and best practices in librarianship.
  • Champions digital and emerging technologies by facilitating the integration of digital tools, emerging technologies, and innovative solutions to enhance library services, such as creative labs, maker spaces, and digital literacy programs.

Requirements

  • Four years of experience in professional library work, two years of which must have been in a supervisory capacity in the field of specialization.
  • Graduation from a recognized college or university with a Masters Degree in Library Science from an accredited (ALA) school of Library Science.
  • Must register for Nebraska Public Librarian Certification through the Nebraska Library Commission within 30 days of the hiring date.
  • Must complete necessary continuing education requirements to keep certification current while employed by the Omaha Public Library.
  • Must be able to transport oneself or coordinate transportation to locations throughout the City during the course of the work day.
  • Must be able to work flexible schedules that include evenings and weekends.

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of, and ability to operate, computers and other technology using standard or customized computer or systems software applications appropriate to the assigned tasks.
  • Knowledge of standard library principles, methods, practices, services, and materials.
  • Knowledge of library reference and research tools.
  • Knowledge of reader interest levels, books, and authors.
  • Knowledge of effective organizational and management policies, procedures, and best practices.
  • Knowledge of budget preparation and budget management.
  • Knowledge of turn-key automation systems.

Skills

  • Hiring, training, assigning, scheduling, supervising, inspecting, and evaluating the work of subordinate personnel.
  • Leadership and management, including a successful track record of managing library services and staff through significant change.
  • Analyzing situations, making appropriate decisions, and taking suitable actions.
  • Writing and formal communications and presentations.
  • Viewing printed text on book bindings to retrieve library materials.
  • Interacting with difficult patrons with tact and diplomacy.
  • Maintaining patron confidentiality.
  • Communicating effectively, both written and verbally.
  • Understanding oral or written instructions.
  • Adhering to safety policies, procedures, and guidelines.

$76,918.40 with step increases to $109,948.80 Annually
