About the Department

The Department of Geography, Environment, and Spatial Analysis offers innovative teaching, hands-on learning, and unforgettable field study. Students explore humankind's ever-changing relationship to the environment in small classes and a state-of-the-art lab, undertaking important research topics like global warming, deforestation, ethnic conflict, urban planning, and much more. Students attend regional and national conferences each year, where their projects earn major awards and the respect of their fellow geographers. The program is known for preparing students for success in graduate school and on the job.

Courses and Areas of Specialization

Courses offered by the department include Nature, Culture, & Food, Global Awareness, California Depth Experience, Geography of the Middle East, Regional Climatology, Mountain Geography, and Political Geography. The department also offers Geospatial Program labs and Cartography.

GSP 101 Lab Instructor

Minimum Qualifications:

• Degree: Earned Bachelor's degree and graduate-level work in related area OR earned Bachelor's degree and advanced-level work in related area.
• Experience: Demonstrated experience in teaching this subject, including ability to teach ArcGIS, use of differential Global Positioning Satellites, fundamentals of Remote Sensing and Cartographic Design.

Preferred: Evidence of scholarly preparation specific to course, including coursework taken, scholarship (written or published work, or presentations), consulting, or other professional experience.

GSP 316, 416 & 426

Minimum Qualifications:

• Degree: Earned Master's degree in appropriate field, or compensating experience.
• Experience: Demonstrated experience in teaching of this subject or of closely related subjects, including ability to teach ArcView and use of differential Global Positioning Satellites.

Preferred: Evidence of scholarly preparation specific to course, including coursework taken, scholarship (written or published work, or presentations), consulting, travel or other professional experience.

GSP 316 Lab Instructor

Minimum Qualifications:

• Degree: Earned Bachelor's degree in appropriate field.
• Experience: Evidence of familiarity with current mapping sciences techniques.

General Qualifications

Unless otherwise noted above, the minimum qualifications are a Master's degree in appropriate field, as well as documented successful teaching experience. Preference will be given to candidates who are ABD or have a completed Ph.D. as well as relevant training and teaching experience for the course(s) or area of specialization.

Position Details

• Position Type: Lecturer
• Availability: As needed
• First Review Date: Applications received by April 1st annually are given first consideration. Early response is encouraged.
• Salary: Dependent on qualifications and experience. Appointees are typically placed at the beginning of the range. The full-time (15 units per semester) monthly base salaries are prorated to the number of units worked and are paid in six monthly payments for each full semester.
