Job Summary

The Sioux City Parks & Recreation department is seeking 60 enthusiastic candidates for the Laborer (Seasonal) position. This role offers opportunities to contribute to the maintenance of Sioux City's parks and cemeteries.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of hand tools, mowing equipment, and related equipment.
  • Physically able to work 8-hour or 10-hour days and lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Willing to commit to a seasonal position lasting up to 6 months.
  • Must be 18 years of age to apply.

Duties

  • Knowledge of types and use of hand tools and mowing equipment.
  • Works as part of a right-of-way mowing crew and operates a mower, weed whip, and pickup truck.
  • Performs various street maintenance duties such as cleaning gutters, spreading sand and salt, shoveling snow, sweeping streets, sidewalks, and alleys, and picking up refuse and brush.
  • Grades and dresses street slopes, driveways, sidewalks, and drainage ditches.
  • Paints meters, valves, pipe fittings, guardrails, street lines, and curbs.
  • Digs and backfills trenches and assists in laying pipe and electrical conduit to grade.
  • Breaks pavement, pours, and shovels asphalt and concrete, raking, tamping, and smoothing asphalt, and operating a manual and automatic compactor.
  • Digs out holes with automatic and manual digging tools, filling depressions with slag, gravel, asphalt, or other materials.
  • Buils forms and assists in pouring concrete for curb, sidewalk, street, and gutter repair and construction projects.
  • Aids in opening and closing graves and digging for monument foundations.
  • Waters, fertilizes, cultivates, and trims lawns, shrubs, flowers, and trees.
  • Aids skilled crew members in maintenance and repair of buildings, grounds, and equipment.
  • Maintains golf course operating aerifier, mowers, and vertical cut units.
  • Positions traffic cones and barricades.
  • Aids in erecting street signs and meter posts.
  • Aids in the installation of water services, mains, and hydrants, and repairs of water mains.
  • Aids in servicing emergency calls such as removing snow from streets, repairing broken water mains, and sewer lines, and similar situations.
  • Cleans catch basins, manholes, and storm, sanitary sewer lines, grounds, ponds, pools, and playground equipment.
  • Cleans and maintains public restrooms and shelter houses on weekends with little or no supervision.
  • Inspects systems and support areas, reporting any problems to supervisors.
  • Completes daily assigned cleaning tasks of pool deck, locker room, and concession areas (garbage, blowing deck, picking up all leaves and debris).
  • Reports any equipment or facility damaged, broken, or defaced.
  • Maintain regular and punctual attendance at work.
  • Regularly lifts up to 25 pounds and occasionally lifts up to 50 pounds overhead.
  • Expected to temporarily perform duties outside of normal classification in the event of a declared emergency.

Qualifications

  • Cognitive Demands, Skills and Abilities: Ability to speak clearly, ability to see details at close range, ability to see details at a distance, ability to identify and understand the speech of another person, ability to listen to and understand information and ideas presented through spoken words and sentences.
  • Job Knowledge: Some knowledge of the types and uses of common hand tools and standard equipment used in construction and maintenance work particularly as applied to specialized work to which assigned; general mechanical ability and ability to perform unskilled to semiskilled tasks in construction and maintenance activities of a physically demanding nature; ability to understand and follow specific oral and written instructions; physical strength and agility sufficient to do strenuous manual labor for extended periods, under varying weather conditions.
  • Language Ability and Interpersonal Communication: Requires effective communication skills and the ability to provide assistance to customers both external and internal. Requires the ability to write and speak clearly, distinctly, and effectively with fellow employees, contractors, and regulatory officials; read in English and compare similarities and differences between words and series of numbers; apply common sense understanding to the work process, procedures, programs, and services; and to provide and follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Physical Requirements: The employee frequently is required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and taste or smell. Ability to quickly move hands, hands together with arms, or two hands to grasp, manipulate, or assemble objects, ability to exert muscle force repeatedly or continuously over time; this involves muscular endurance and resistance to muscle fatigue, ability to use abdominal and lower back muscles to support part of the body repeatedly or continuously over time without "giving out" or fatiguing, ability to quickly and repeatedly bend, stretch, twist, or reach out with your body, arms, and/or legs. Regularly lifts up to 25 pounds and occasionally lifts up to 50 pounds overhead. Work Environment: Five percent of work is performed in a normal inside office environment with appropriate heating and cooling and is not subject to significant occupational or environmental hazards other than those normally associated with general public contact, dust or odors. Field conditions outdoors are varying weather conditions, with varying low to high equipment noise; walking on grass, gravel, dirt, rock, asphalt, etc.; with normal outdoor to high outdoor dust levels. Ninety-five percent of work is outdoors.
  • Minimum Required Qualifications: Some experience in performing general manual work and preferably completion of eighth grade school courses; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
