Laborer - Parks & Recreation

This is routine work performing a variety of unskilled tasks in the maintenance of buildings, grounds, water and sewer systems, and related public works activities. Incumbents work under direct supervision and may develop skills for higher-level positions such as Carpenters Helper, Parks Maintainer, or Motor Equipment Operator.

Responsibilities

• Perform unskilled labor including collecting and disposing of garbage and trash, snow removal, street cleaning, and digging/refilling trenches for water and sewer pipelines.
• Operate equipment such as air compressors, jackhammers, concrete mixers, and pumps.
• Assist with water main repairs, pump station maintenance, and building upkeep (e.g., painting, plumbing, electrical work, HVAC repairs).
• Follow simple oral and written instructions.
• Use personal computers and common office software (word processing, spreadsheets, databases) with acceptable accuracy and speed.

Requirements

• Willingness to perform unskilled manual labor in all weather conditions.
• Ability to develop a broad range of public works skills, including operating motor vehicles and power equipment.
• Dependability and physical condition commensurate with job demands.

Broome County residency is required at time of appointment. All new hires must pass a pre-employment drug test.
