Seasonal Laborer - Parks & Recreation

About the role

Seasonal Laborers in the Parks & Recreation Department work full-time hours from April to November, totaling no more than 1,000 hours. This non-supervisory position assists or leads hands-on and technical maintenance of City park facilities, environs, and equipment. Work is typically performed under direct supervision, though routine field repairs and corrective actions are often carried out independently. The role may also involve park inspections, inventory, and field data collection. Interaction occurs with customers, the general public, other department personnel, and other agencies.

Responsibilities

• Grounds and Facilities Maintenance: Assist with seasonal maintenance, including mowing grass, trimming and watering lawns, trees, and shrubs; watering, fertilizing, and tending flower beds; picking up trash; and cleaning restrooms in City parks.
• Transport: Drive or ride trucks to haul materials and transport equipment to and from job sites. Load and unload materials and equipment from trucks and trailers. Listen to radio for assignments.
• Activity Preparation: Prepare facilities for activities by setting up tables, chairs, recreational equipment, bleachers, and other equipment.
• General Equipment Maintenance: Perform minor equipment maintenance and repairs. Wash vehicles and equipment.
• Manual Labor: Paint buildings and other objects.
• Field Data Collection: Photograph amenities and infrastructure for park inventory. Collect data and field notes on the condition and position of city-owned items, including benches, drinking fountains, trash and recycling receptacles, and signage.
• Snow/Ice Removal: Shovel snow and ice from parking lots, streets, and sidewalks. Drive trucks during snow removal and ice control operations.
• Other Duties: Perform other related duties as requested or assigned.

Qualifications

Entry Level (begins at $16.00 per hour, DOQ): High school diploma or equivalent. Previous work experience in construction, maintenance, and/or operation of trucks and light equipment preferred.

Senior Level (begins at $19.00 per hour, DOQ): High school diploma or equivalent. A minimum of five (5) years of previous work experience in construction, maintenance, and/or operation of trucks and light equipment preferred.

Any combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may also be considered.

Pay

Entry Level: $16.00 per hour (DOQ). Senior Level: $19.00 per hour (DOQ).

Schedule

Regular shifts are 7:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Occasional evenings and weekends may be required for special events.
