This is a term-limited position within the Colorado Judicial Department, created to support specific operational needs and project-based work. Expected duration is approximately 12 months, though the actual end date may vary depending on business needs and available funding. Placement within the progressive job series (Judicial Clerk I, II, or III) will be determined based on minimum qualifications and relevant experience.

About the role

Performs duties of a judicial clerk plus daily oversight and direction of newer staff. Responsible for case management across all case types or within a complex specialized area, conducts independent special projects, and provides courtroom and judicial officer support. This position may also oversee work quality, training, and assignments for other employees.

Responsibilities

  • Provides comprehensive case management, customer service, or judicial officer support for clients, judicial officers, or other judicial staff over the counter, in the courtroom, or via phone and email.
  • Instructs customers on case types and procedures; shares applicable information with law enforcement, attorneys, correctional officials, and other outside agencies.
  • Serves as a subject matter expert; conducts in-depth research to resolve complex case-related questions and issues for court staff.
  • Troubleshoots and resolves technical issues; determines appropriate course of action for reporting or escalation if necessary.
  • Contributes to cross-functional tasks and provides coverage for any function typically performed by a Judicial Clerk as needed.
  • Monitors and evaluates workload influx, backlog, and priorities; takes proactive measures to redistribute work and ensure deadlines are met.
  • Serves as a primary point of contact for other units, internal departments, trial courts, and external agencies; resolves or escalates reported issues.
  • Maintains unit or division calendars, schedules court dates, and sets internal reviews to ensure timely case flow and processing.
  • Contributes to case and docket management by supporting senior staff with recommendations or revisions to improve efficiency.
  • Prepares, publishes, and distributes daily court dockets.
  • Develops and implements processes and procedures in collaboration with other teams in response to new legislation or changes in local practices.
  • Reviews updates to best business practices and state-approved forms; disseminates information and ensures unit compliance.
  • Creates and maintains unit resources such as manuals, written processes, procedures, cheat sheets, checklists, contact lists, and shared spreadsheets/templates.
  • Mentors employees and leads training initiatives for peers and new staff; implements and monitors training plans developed by supervisors.
  • Participates in cross-training to assist courtrooms and dockets across the district.
  • Monitors and maintains the quality of work product; identifies training needs and provides technical correction and instruction.
  • Collaborates with others to coordinate and facilitate meetings, including collecting agenda items, distributing documents, and publishing minutes.
  • Attends and participates in various meetings, committees, and work groups as assigned.
  • Performs other duties as assigned, including potential supervisory responsibilities such as overseeing work quality, training, and assignments.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or G.E.D.
  • At least five (5) years of experience as a Judicial Clerk II or Court Judicial Assistant for the Colorado Judicial Department, or at least five (5) years of relevant work experience in a position similar to the Judicial Clerk II role.

Work Environment

  • Office or similar indoor environment.
  • Relatively free from unpleasant environmental conditions and hazards.
  • Exposure to individuals with known violent backgrounds, hostile or irate individuals, and communicable diseases.

Physical Effort

  • Sedentary work involving sitting most of the time; occasional walking or standing may be required.
  • Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally; negligible amount of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or move objects.

Pay

Salary range: $54,020.88 - $78,330.60. Offers will be determined based on relevant experience, budget availability, and compliance with the Equal Pay for Equal Work Act, aligning with the Colorado Judicial Department's compensation step plan.
