About the role
The Judicial Department works to provide equal access to justice, contribute to public safety, and strengthen the rule of law across Colorado. This role performs skilled administrative, customer service, and technical support related to court operations, including docket management, courtroom duties, and case processing. The position is part of a progressive job series (Judicial Clerk I, II, or III), with placement determined by qualifications and relevant experience.
Responsibilities
- Provide case management, customer service, and judicial officer support for clients, officers, and staff in-person, via phone, email, and courtroom settings, including filing, scanning, and uploading documents.
- Instruct customers on case types and procedures; share information with law enforcement, attorneys, correctional officials, and other agencies.
- Respond to customer inquiries, act as a liaison between divisions/judicial officers and customers, de-escalate conflicts, and explain court processes without providing legal advice.
- Create, process, and manage electronic and paper-filed case documentation, including tracking case status, processing exhibits, plea agreements, sentencing, restitution, court-ordered fees, notices, orders, bonds, warrants, and protection orders.
- Maintain the case management system, including updating case status, preparing cases for assignment, issuing complex court orders, and managing case status reports.
- Process payments, reconcile cash drawers, and prepare daily deposits.
- Provide direct support to judicial officers, including drafting and revising court orders, maintaining calendars, preparing mileage reimbursements, and composing correspondence.
- Process opinion issuance, including reviewing submissions from chambers, maintaining weekly opinion announcements, editing opinion captions, transmitting opinions to legal research vendors, and updating the case management system.
- Perform courtroom management, including preparing daily dockets, ensuring courtroom cleanliness, directing parties, and managing case flow.
- Assist with courtroom audio/visual, recording, and virtual conferencing systems to ensure accurate and clear recordings of hearings.
- Schedule interpreters as needed.
- Participate in cross-training to assist across courtrooms and dockets within the district.
- Occasionally direct helpers, assistants, seasonal employees, interns, or temporary employees.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- High school diploma or G.E.D.
- At least 1 year of experience as a Judicial Clerk I or Court Judicial Assistant for the Colorado Judicial Department, or at least 1 year of relevant work experience in a similar role.
Work Environment
