Responsibilities

• Book and discharge inmates, properly recording all demographic information; photograph and fingerprint all new admissions.
• Control access to the jail, including monitoring entrances and screening visitors.
• Interpret and comply with all bond conditions and commitment orders.
• Maintain constant 24-hour supervision of all inmates and jail facilities via control stations and patrols of corridors, dorms, cell blocks, and work areas.

• Enforce rules of conduct through verbal and written reports to superiors; settle disputes between inmates and assist in averting fights, riots, and escape attempts.

• Control and deliver all prescription and non-prescription drugs and pharmaceuticals; dispense prescribed medication to prisoners.
• Allow and supervise prisoner access to educational, recreational, religious, and library services; arrange daily schedules for library visits, work assignments, family visits, and counseling appointments.
• Allow attorneys, probation agents, clergymen, and other authorized individuals access to inmate clients; document all inmate incidents and activities including correspondence, visitation, medication, recreation, and disciplinary problems.
• Receive bail bond monies and fine payments.
• Comply with all procedures and schedules for meals, laundry, cleaning, maintenance, inspection, and inmate activities; serve meals, distribute commissary items, and deliver cleaning and sanitation supplies.
• Facilitate and document all Huber and work release inmate departures and arrivals.
• Identify and take appropriate action with special inmates such as juveniles, females, mentally disturbed, and physically ill individuals.
• Maintain records of prisoners' identification and charges; keep daily logs of prisoner activities.
• Run intoximeter tests on OWI arrests.
• Inspect mail for contraband; issue clothing, tools, and other authorized items to inmates.
• Operate all locking devices (manual or electronic).
• Advise the public on visiting hours and supervise visits.
• Conduct fire, safety, and sanitation inspections; check sanitary conditions and fire and safety hazards.
• Provide oral and written reports to supervisors on inmate work quality and quantity, disturbances, rule violations, and unusual occurrences.

Qualifications

• No felony criminal convictions.
• Must possess a valid driver's license.
• Must be 18 years of age or older.
• Possess a high school diploma or equivalent.
