Jailer Part-Time

About the role

To provide duties required in the operation of a County jail detention facility. The jailer must perform duties to ensure secure, safe, and sanitary conditions at all times. Currently accepting applications for part-time work.

Part-time positions are not eligible for benefits initially but may become eligible depending on hours worked. Part-time roles often evolve into full-time employment opportunities.

Responsibilities

• Book and discharge inmates, recording all appropriate inmate demographic information.
• Control all access to the jail.
• Photograph and fingerprint all new admissions.
• Interpret and comply with all bond conditions and commitment orders.
• Allow and supervise prisoner access to educational, recreational, religious, and library services.
• Grant access to attorneys, probation agents, clergymen, and other authorized individuals; document inmate incidents and activities, including correspondence, visitation, medication, recreation, and disciplinary problems.
• Control and deliver all prescriptions and non-prescription drugs and pharmaceuticals.
• Receive bail bond monies and fine payments.
• Comply with procedures and schedules for meals, laundry, cleaning, maintenance, inspection, and inmate activities.
• Identify and take appropriate action with special inmates such as juveniles, females, mentally disturbed, and physically ill inmates.
• Facilitate and document all Huber and work release inmate departures and arrivals.
• Prevent and report all damage to jail property.
• Maintain constant 24-hour supervision of all inmates and jail facilities.
• Administer intoximeter tests on OWI arrests.
• Control inmates from the jailer station and/or by patrolling corridors, dorms, cell blocks, and work areas.
• Escort inmates (individually or in groups) to work assignments or other activities.
• Supervise inmates on work assignments.
• Inspect cells, dorms, hallways, and visitation areas for contraband.
• Enforce rules of conduct by making verbal and written reports to superiors.
• Check sanitary conditions, fire, and safety hazards.
• Assist in averting fights, riots, and escapes undertaken by inmates.
• Transfer inmates to court, doctor, and other treatment clinics.
• Distribute cleaning and sanitation supplies; deliver commissary orders, medications, and mail; pick up and deliver personal laundry and bedding for inmates.
• Operate all locking devices (manual or electronic).
• Advise the public on visiting hours and supervise visitation.
• Perform other duties as directed by the Sheriff or designee for the efficient operation of the jail.

Requirements

• No felony criminal convictions.
• Must possess a valid driver’s license.
• Must be 18 years of age or older.
• High school diploma or equivalent.

Physical Requirements

The employee is regularly required to:

• Talk and hear.
• Accurately view computer screens, read reports, adjust and focus vision both long and short distances, perceive depth, and distinguish faces and objects.
• Taste and smell.
• Stand, walk, sit, and reach with hands and arms.

The employee is occasionally required to:

• Climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
• Lift and/or move more than 100 pounds.

Training and Certifications

To be completed after date of hire unless already certified:

• Completion of 160 hours Basic Jail Officers Training.
• Completion of 24 hours yearly recertification for Jail Officers.
• Intoximeter Operator Certification.
• T.I.M.E. System Part I.
