Interior Upholstery Technician - 1015
Full Time On-Site position in East Alton, IL, USA.
About the role
As an Interior Upholstery Technician at West Star, you will repair, refurbish, and reinstall interior upholstery components on world-class business aircraft. Daily tasks include general upholstery work on seats, panels, and other interior items, as well as removal and installation of seats, disassembly, cleaning, repair, and modifications of components. Duties vary daily and are assigned by the Team Leader overseeing the project.
Responsibilities
- Perform basic to advanced foam build-ups, patterning, and sewing of seat parts and other upholstery items
- Perform minor modifications
- Complete daily turnover sheets
- Maintain and repair shop facility, equipment, and tooling
- Navigate electronic training, manuals, and maintenance databases using basic computer skills
- Maintain cleanliness of shop and surroundings
- Work independently when required
- Communicate effectively in English (speaking, writing, reading)
- Perform any other job-related duties as assigned by supervisor or management
- Attend work as scheduled, including overtime and weekend assignments
- Notify supervisor in advance if unable to work
- Follow Federal Aviation Administration guidelines and company safety rules
- Maintain customer-oriented work habits
- Assist in major modification work as needed
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Valid driver’s license approved for airline travel and/or a valid passport (ideal but not required)
- Reliable transportation
Qualifications
Experience levels and expectations:
- Tech I: 0-2 years of experience in upholstery (aviation, auto, RV, marine, or related field). Limited to no knowledge of the position; requires close supervision and constant check-ins.
- Tech II: 2-4 years of experience. Considerable knowledge of the job with a broad understanding of detailed aspects; requires general supervision and instructions.
- Tech III: 4-6 years of experience. Full knowledge of the job with complete understanding of detailed aspects; limited supervision required, no instruction needed, and can act as a trainer or mentor.
- Master Tech: 6+ years of experience in aviation upholstery. Subject matter expert with comprehensive knowledge of the job.

Physical Requirements
- Lift up to 50 lbs
- Routine walking, bending, squatting, or sitting
- Repetitive physical motion with arms and hands, emphasizing grasping, feeling, and finger dexterity
- Stand for long periods
- Climb ladders and stairs, work in small restricted areas
Mental Requirements
- Understand and implement regulations and guidelines (e.g., OSHA, Hazmat)
- Work professionally with others
- Read and comprehend various documents
- Plan and organize procedures and operations
Supervision
- Work under the supervision of an assigned Team Leader and Interior Management
- May supervise other technicians in some capacity
- Work with minimal supervision when required
Working Conditions
- Majority of work performed in a hangar or shop environment
- Occasional work outside on the ramp
- Varied positions in and around the aircraft
Equipment Used
- Personal hand tools (supplied by the mechanic)
- Electrical power tools such as sewing machines, sanders, saws, etc.
- Computer, copy machine, and other office equipment
Pay
The hourly rate for this position generally ranges between $20-$35. Actual hourly rate varies based on factors including location, experience, and performance. Additional compensation includes a shift differential for alternate shifts, a semi-annual discretionary bonus, 401(k) company match, and employer contributions to a Health Savings Account (HSA).
