Job Summary

The Instrument Technician must be able to install, test, calibrate, troubleshoot, overhaul and repair electrical, controlling, indicating and measuring instrument devices to ensure specified operating performance using hand tools, testing and calibrating instruments and equipment, and precision measuring instruments. The role requires the ability to read and understand manuals, wiring or instrumentation schematics, and testing specifications, as well as troubleshoot electric motors, install wiring to circuits, and possess some knowledge of electrical schematics and PLCs. Other duties may be assigned.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

• Layout, fabricate and install tubing and tub trays.
• Apply knowledge of mathematics to instrumentation, such as ratios, powers of 10, algebraic equations, English‑to‑metric conversion, and pressure conversions (inches of water to PSI, inches of mercury to PSI).
• Read blueprints, schematics and loop drawings and prepare job reports.
• Assemble and disassemble all types of electronic process controls, pneumatic controls, and hydraulic systems and components.
• Calibrate equipment using common calibration procedures and locate, interpret, and apply additional procedures as needed.
• Understand the principles of pH and redox, the equipment needed to measure them, and how to control pH and redox of a liquid.
• Work with and understand Ohm’s Law, Kirchhoff’s Law, diodes, capacitors, and other electrical components.
• Understand steam properties and behavior (e.g., saturation properties).
• Apply principles of chemistry and physics required in instrumentation, including specific gravity, density of liquids and solids, mechanical advantages, proportions of liquids, and phase change temperatures (melting, freezing, boiling points).
• Troubleshoot and check electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic systems using proper test equipment.
• Understand fundamental instrumentation loops, their functions, and the role of each component within the loop.
• Recognize common types of chemical plant process equipment such as distillation columns, heat exchangers, boilers, turbines, and compressors.
• Apply procedures for measuring pressure, level, flow, temperature, weight, density, heat flux, humidity, and moisture.
• Maintain a current electrician’s license or identification card to meet state regulations.
• Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• Education – no minimum education requirements.
• Experience – 4 years of journeyman‑level experience.
• Certification/License – NCCER certification, a valid TWIC card, and a driver’s license.
