Instrument Technician - Austin Industrial (Deer Park, Tx)

About the role

Instrument Technician responsible for installing, testing, calibrating, troubleshooting, overhauling and repairing electrical, controlling, indicating and measuring instrument devices to ensure specified operating performance. Uses hand tools, testing and calibrating instruments, precision measuring equipment, reads and interprets manuals, wiring or instrumentation schematics and testing specifications, and troubleshoots electric motors and wiring circuits. Some knowledge of electrical schematics and PLCs is required.

Responsibilities

• Layout, fabricate and install tubing and tub trays.
• Apply mathematical knowledge to instrumentation (ratios, powers of 10, algebra, English‑to‑metric conversion, conversion of inches of water or mercury to PSI, etc.).
• Read blueprints, schematics and loop drawings and prepare job reports.
• Assemble and disassemble electronic process controls, pneumatic controls, hydraulic systems and components.
• Calibrate equipment using common calibration procedures; read, interpret, apply and locate additional procedures as needed.
• Understand principles of pH and redox, operate related equipment, and control pH/redox of liquids.
• Apply Ohm’s Law, Kirchhoff’s Law, and work with diodes, capacitors and other electrical components.
• Understand steam behavior and saturation properties.
• Apply chemistry and physics principles required in instrumentation (specific gravity, density, mechanical advantages, melting/freezing/boiling points, etc.).
• Troubleshoot and test electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic systems using proper test equipment.
• Understand fundamental instrumentation loops, their functions, and component roles.
• Recognize common chemical plant process equipment such as distillation columns, heat exchangers, boilers, turbines and compressors.
• Measure pressure, flow, temperature, weight, density, heat flux, humidity and moisture using appropriate procedures.
• Maintain a current electrician’s license or identification card to meet state regulations.
• Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• Education – no minimum education requirements.
• Experience – 4 years of journeyman‑level experience.
• Certifications/Licenses – NCCER certification, a valid TWIC card, and a driver’s license.
• Legal authorization to work for any employer in the United States; the company does not sponsor employment visas.

Physical, Mental & Environmental Requirements

Employees must be able to sit, stand, walk, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, and use hands and fingers to perform assigned duties. The position may require lifting, carrying, pushing or pulling up to 50 lb, working at elevations, on uneven surfaces, or in confined spaces. Sufficient visual, hearing, communication, and motor skills are required to safely perform job responsibilities. Employees must read, comprehend and follow safety procedures, work instructions and company policies; exercise sound judgment; solve problems; maintain attention to detail; manage stress; and adapt to changing priorities in a fast‑paced environment.

Work is performed in industrial and construction settings with exposure to weather conditions, temperature extremes, noise, dust, fumes, moving equipment, vibration and other site‑specific hazards. Personal protective equipment (PPE) must be worn, and all customer, site, regulatory, medical and fitness‑for‑duty requirements must be met.
