ICU Veterinary Nurse I

Provides patient care for ill and injured animals in the Veterinary Medical Center. This position primarily supports the Small Animal Emergency and Critical Care unit, instructs and demonstrates techniques to students, assists students, veterinary technicians, and veterinarians in their work, and maintains supplies, equipment, and cleanliness of hospital areas.

Responsibilities

• Deliver nursing care to critically ill and injured animals
• Perform emergency triage and patient stabilization
• Set up and assist with emergency procedures
• Instruct and demonstrate veterinary techniques to students
• Assist veterinary technicians and veterinarians in clinical tasks
• Maintain hospital supplies, equipment, and cleanliness

Requirements

• Knowledge typically acquired through 2–3 years of college, technical, or vocational school in Veterinary Technology
• Six months to one year of related experience in patient care, surgery, anesthesia, drug dosing, and sterilization
• Proficiency in spreadsheet and word processing software
• Licensed as a Veterinary Technician in the State of Michigan or ability to obtain certification within one year of employment

Physical Demands

• Lifting and carrying animals up to 50 pounds individually or 150 pounds as part of a team
• Potential exposure to TB or Mycobacterium bovis from animals or specimens
• Handling unfixed animal tissue
• Wearing a respirator (not a paper dust mask for comfort)
